16	16	1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION urging the Indiana
17	17	2 Department of Transportation to rename a portion of road after
18	18	3 Second Lieutenant Harry J. Michael.
19	19	4 Whereas, Harry J. Michael was a lifelong Hoosier born on
20	20	5 March 13, 1922, in Benton, Indiana, and grew up a farm boy in
21	21	6 Milford;
22	22	7 Whereas, Harry went on to study agriculture at Purdue
23	23	8 University, where he was called from his education to serve in
24	24	9 the United States Army and put the needs of the nation first;
25	25	10 Whereas, Second Lieutenant Michael is the only Purdue
26	26	11 student or faculty member awarded the Congressional Medal
27	27	12 of Honor;
28	28	13 Whereas, Second Lieutenant Michael was killed in the line of
29	29	14 duty while serving in Company L, 3rd Battalion, 318th Infantry
30	30	15 Regiment, 80th Infantry Division during World War II;
31	31	16 Whereas, Second Lieutenant Michael served as a rifle platoon
32	32	17 leader when his company began an assault on a wooded ridge
33	33	18 northeast of the village of Neiderzerf, Germany, on March 13,
34	34	19 1945;
35	35	20 Whereas, Second Lieutenant Michael, at the head of his
36	36	21 platoon, heard the click of an enemy machine gun bolt and
37	37	22 halted his company before moving into the woods and
38	38	23 discovering two enemy machine gun crews;
39	39	24 Whereas, Second Lieutenant Michael caught the enemy by

41	41	1 surprise when he executed a sudden charge, leading to the
42	42	2 capture of both guns and crews;
43	43	3 Whereas, Second Lieutenant Michael's actions continued the
44	44	4 next day when he led his platoon at daybreak in a flanking
45	45	5 movement on the enemy's position. Bitter fighting led to the
46	46	6 capture of 25 members of an SS mountain division, three
47	47	7 artillery pieces, and 20 horses;
48	48	8 Whereas, Second Lieutenant Michael fought bravely, making
49	49	9 two personal reconnaissance missions of the woods on his left
50	50	10 flank, where he killed two, wounded four, and captured 13
51	51	11 enemy soldiers before leading his platoon in a successful
52	52	12 assault on a line of enemy pillboxes, capturing the objective,
53	53	13 killing 10 enemies and capturing 30 additional prisoners;
54	54	14 Whereas, Second Lieutenant Michael was shot and killed
55	55	15 while investigating sniper fire directed at his company the next
56	56	16 morning; and
57	57	17 Whereas, It is fitting that the Indiana General Assembly
58	58	18 recognize the heroic actions of Second Lieutenant Harry J.
59	59	19 Michael as a Hoosier and a soldier in the U.S. Army:
60	60	20 Therefore,
61	61	21 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
62	62	22 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
63	63	23 the Senate concurring:
64	64	24 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly remembers
65	65	25 the heroic actions of Second Lieutenant Harry J. Michael.
66	66	26 SECTION 2. That the Indiana General Assembly urges the
67	67	27 Indiana Department of Transportation to rename a portion of
68	68	28 U.S. Highway 231 from Lindberg Road to the intersection of
69	69	29 U.S. 52 and Sagamore Parkway West in West Lafayette,
70	70	30 Indiana, the "Harry J. Michael Memorial Highway".
71	71	31 SECTION 3. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
72	72	32 Representatives shall transmit a copy of this resolution to the
73	73	33 Commissioner of the Indiana Department of Transportation, the
74	74	34 Tippecanoe County Veterans Council, and the office of State
75	75	35 Representative Chris Campbell.

78	78	Mr. Speaker: Your Committee on Roads and Transportation, to
79	79	which was referred House Concurrent Resolution 18, has had the same
80	80	under consideration and begs leave to report the same back to the
81	81	House with the recommendation that said resolution do pass.
