1313 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing the
1414 2 Bicentennial of Montgomery County, Indiana.
1515 3 Whereas, On December 21, 1822, the Indiana General
1616 4 Assembly admitted Montgomery County as the State's 44th
1717 5 county and named it after General Richard Montgomery, who
1818 6 fought and died in the Revolutionary War;
1919 7 Whereas, Prior to settlement and until as late as 1832, the
2020 8 area that would become Montgomery County was initially
2121 9 inhabited by Native Americans known as Mound Builders;
2222 10 Whereas, After first being settled by William Offield and his
2323 11 family in 1821, Montgomery County has been home to a
2424 12 number of notable residents to include Henry S. Lane, a
2525 13 founding member of the Republican Party; Lew Wallace, Civil
2626 14 War General and author of the best-selling novel Ben Hur;
2727 15 Mary Holloway Wilhite, the first woman to practice medicine
2828 16 in Indiana and proponent for women's equality during the
2929 17 suffrage movement; Wilbur De Paris, an African American Jazz
3030 18 Musician who toured with Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington,
3131 19 and Ella Fitzgerald; and Joseph P. Allen, a U.S. astronaut who
3232 20 logged a total of 314 hours in space;
3333 21 Whereas, The City of Crawfordsville, the seat of
3434 22 Montgomery County, is world-renowned for its variety, size,
3535 23 and completeness of crinoid specimens, where a noteworthy 60
3636 24 different species of this fossilized creature have been found
3737 25 since they were discovered along Indian Creek in 1836;

3939 1 Whereas, Crawfordsville is also home to a strange
4040 2 phenomenon, now called the Crawfordsville Monster, described
4141 3 by many of the city's residents as a pure-white, eighteen-foot-
4242 4 long and eight-foot-wide mass with propelling fins and one
4343 5 great flaming eye that moved through the air on the night of
4444 6 September 5, 1891;
4545 7 Whereas, Montgomery County is home to several Carnegie
4646 8 libraries, including the first Carnegie library in the State of
4747 9 Indiana, which was built in Crawfordsville in 1901, and stands
4848 10 as a local museum;
4949 11 Whereas, Shades State Park, located in the Southwest
5050 12 corner of Montgomery County, was established in 1947 and
5151 13 continues to be a popular hiking and canoeing destination,
5252 14 receiving over 87,000 visitors in 2018-2019;
5353 15 Whereas, Montgomery County is considered the "Cradle of
5454 16 Basketball", as it is where the sport was first introduced to
5555 17 Indiana in 1892, the home of the first Indiana High School
5656 18 Athletic Association State Basketball Championship in 1911,
5757 19 and the location for the filming of "Hoosiers" in 1985;
5858 20 Whereas, December 21, 2022, will mark the official
5959 21 bicentennial of Montgomery County;
6060 22 Whereas, Throughout 2022, Montgomery County will
6161 23 celebrate its bicentennial through special events, history, and
6262 24 community involvement; and
6363 25 Whereas, It is fitting that the Montgomery County
6464 26 Bicentennial be recognized: Therefore,
6565 27 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly
6666 28 of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives
6767 29 concurring:
6868 30 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly
6969 31 recognizes the Bicentennial of Montgomery County, Indiana.
