BOOTS , read first time and referred to Committee on 2022 RC 1532/DI RW Introduced Second Regular Session 122nd General Assembly (2022) SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION No. _____ 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing the 2 Bicentennial of Montgomery County, Indiana. 3 Whereas, On December 21, 1822, the Indiana General 4 Assembly admitted Montgomery County as the State's 44th 5 county and named it after General Richard Montgomery, who 6 fought and died in the Revolutionary War; 7 Whereas, Prior to settlement and until as late as 1832, the 8 area that would become Montgomery County was initially 9 inhabited by Native Americans known as Mound Builders; 10 Whereas, After first being settled by William Offield and his 11 family in 1821, Montgomery County has been home to a 12 number of notable residents to include Henry S. Lane, a 13 founding member of the Republican Party; Lew Wallace, Civil 14 War General and author of the best-selling novel Ben Hur; 15 Mary Holloway Wilhite, the first woman to practice medicine 16 in Indiana and proponent for women's equality during the 17 suffrage movement; Wilbur De Paris, an African American Jazz 18 Musician who toured with Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, 19 and Ella Fitzgerald; and Joseph P. Allen, a U.S. astronaut who 20 logged a total of 314 hours in space; 21 Whereas, The City of Crawfordsville, the seat of 22 Montgomery County, is world-renowned for its variety, size, 23 and completeness of crinoid specimens, where a noteworthy 60 24 different species of this fossilized creature have been found 25 since they were discovered along Indian Creek in 1836; 2022 RC 1532/DI RW 2 1 Whereas, Crawfordsville is also home to a strange 2 phenomenon, now called the Crawfordsville Monster, described 3 by many of the city's residents as a pure-white, eighteen-foot- 4 long and eight-foot-wide mass with propelling fins and one 5 great flaming eye that moved through the air on the night of 6 September 5, 1891; 7 Whereas, Montgomery County is home to several Carnegie 8 libraries, including the first Carnegie library in the State of 9 Indiana, which was built in Crawfordsville in 1901, and stands 10 as a local museum; 11 Whereas, Shades State Park, located in the Southwest 12 corner of Montgomery County, was established in 1947 and 13 continues to be a popular hiking and canoeing destination, 14 receiving over 87,000 visitors in 2018-2019; 15 Whereas, Montgomery County is considered the "Cradle of 16 Basketball", as it is where the sport was first introduced to 17 Indiana in 1892, the home of the first Indiana High School 18 Athletic Association State Basketball Championship in 1911, 19 and the location for the filming of "Hoosiers" in 1985; 20 Whereas, December 21, 2022, will mark the official 21 bicentennial of Montgomery County; 22 Whereas, Throughout 2022, Montgomery County will 23 celebrate its bicentennial through special events, history, and 24 community involvement; and 25 Whereas, It is fitting that the Montgomery County 26 Bicentennial be recognized: Therefore, 27 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly 28 of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives 29 concurring: 30 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly 31 recognizes the Bicentennial of Montgomery County, Indiana. 32 SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed 2022 RC 1532/DI RW 3 1 to transmit copies of this Resolution to John Frey, President of 2 Montgomery County Board of Commissioners, Commissioner 3 Jim Fulwider, Commissioner Dan Guard, and County 4 Administrator Tom Klein. 2022 RC 1532/DI RW
