1818 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION celebrating the
1919 2 achievements and contributions of attorney, community leader,
2020 3 and civil rights activist Fay H. Williams.
2121 4 Whereas, Fay H. Williams is recognized as a community
2222 5 leader who has worked tirelessly to better the lives of others,
2323 6 especially women, minorities, the mentally ill, and those who
2424 7 face disadvantages;
2525 8 Whereas, Her work on behalf of others, starting from early
2626 9 childhood, exemplifies what it means to live a life of service;
2727 10 Whereas, She has used her formidable organizing and
2828 11 fundraising skills to advance civil rights and equality in our
2929 12 society;
3030 13 Whereas, Fay's influence extends nationally, especially
3131 14 through her work with the League of Women Voters, where as
3232 15 chair of the Women's Education Fund, stretching back to the
3333 16 1960s, she worked to educate and encourage women to seek
3434 17 elected office;
3535 18 Whereas, She has guided and strengthened many central
3636 19 Indiana civic and cultural organizations through her service as
3737 20 a board member, including as a founding board member of the
3838 21 Indianapolis Urban League and Girls Inc.;
3939 22 Whereas, She has also served the community through her
4040 23 work as a family law attorney, which has had a profound effect
4141 24 on people's lives;

4343 1 Whereas, Fay has built and mobilized connections, networks,
4444 2 and relationships across boundaries to effect change and to
4545 3 bring people together to make a difference;
4646 4 Whereas, Her advocacy of the Juneteenth emancipation
4747 5 celebration, rising from her witness as a child in Galveston,
4848 6 Texas, has educated many about the enduring meaning and
4949 7 power of this event in our nation's history and the importance
5050 8 of remembering it across generations;
5151 9 Whereas, Her efforts to expand the commemoration of
5252 10 Juneteenth have been untiring and have led to observance of
5353 11 this key event in the Indianapolis area long before it was finally
5454 12 recognized as a national holiday; and
5555 13 Whereas, Those who have benefitted from Fay H. Williams'
5656 14 wisdom and work continue to shape our community for the
5757 15 better, creating a lasting legacy: Therefore,
5858 16 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
5959 17 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
6060 18 the Senate concurring:
6161 19 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly celebrates
6262 20 the accomplishments and legacy of Fay H. Williams and
6363 21 expresses its deep appreciation for her distinguished service to
6464 22 the community, her dedication to equal rights, her passion for
6565 23 history and its impact, and her demonstration of true
6666 24 community leadership.
6767 25 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
6868 26 Representatives shall transmit a copy of this resolution to Fay
6969 27 H. Williams.
