Williams. 4 Whereas, Fay H. Williams is recognized as a community 5 leader who has worked tirelessly to better the lives of others, 6 especially women, minorities, the mentally ill, and those who 7 face disadvantages; 8 Whereas, Her work on behalf of others, starting from early 9 childhood, exemplifies what it means to live a life of service; 10 Whereas, She has used her formidable organizing and 11 fundraising skills to advance civil rights and equality in our 12 society; 13 Whereas, Fay's influence extends nationally, especially 14 through her work with the League of Women Voters, where as 15 chair of the Women's Education Fund, stretching back to the 16 1960s, she worked to educate and encourage women to seek 17 elected office; 18 Whereas, She has guided and strengthened many central 19 Indiana civic and cultural organizations through her service as 20 a board member, including as a founding board member of the 21 Indianapolis Urban League and Girls Inc.; 22 Whereas, She has also served the community through her 23 work as a family law attorney, which has had a profound effect 24 on people's lives; 2023 HC 1012/DI 140 2 1 Whereas, Fay has built and mobilized connections, networks, 2 and relationships across boundaries to effect change and to 3 bring people together to make a difference; 4 Whereas, Her advocacy of the Juneteenth emancipation 5 celebration, rising from her witness as a child in Galveston, 6 Texas, has educated many about the enduring meaning and 7 power of this event in our nation's history and the importance 8 of remembering it across generations; 9 Whereas, Her efforts to expand the commemoration of 10 Juneteenth have been untiring and have led to observance of 11 this key event in the Indianapolis area long before it was finally 12 recognized as a national holiday; and 13 Whereas, Those who have benefitted from Fay H. Williams' 14 wisdom and work continue to shape our community for the 15 better, creating a lasting legacy: Therefore, 16 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives 17 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana, 18 the Senate concurring: 19 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly celebrates 20 the accomplishments and legacy of Fay H. Williams and 21 expresses its deep appreciation for her distinguished service to 22 the community, her dedication to equal rights, her passion for 23 history and its impact, and her demonstration of true 24 community leadership. 25 SECTION 2.
