Schaibley, Cash _______________________, read first time and referred to Committee on 20232782 2023 HC 1047/DI 140 Introduced First Regular Session of the 123rd General Assembly (2023) HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION No. ____ 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing former 2 Indiana House of Representatives employee Brad Burk on his 3 25th anniversary leading the American Cancer Society in 4 Indiana. 5 Whereas, The American Cancer Society has been in existence 6 for 110 years with a mission of improving the lives of people 7 with cancer and their families through advocacy, research, and 8 patient support and to ensure everyone has an opportunity to 9 prevent, detect, treat, and survive cancer; 10 Whereas, Cancer remains a preeminent health crisis, causing 11 the death of over 13,000 Hoosiers, annually; 12 Whereas, Brad Burk departed the Indiana House staff in 1998 13 for a meaningful career at the American Cancer Society, where 14 he has continually played a statewide leadership role 15 advocating for public health interventions to save lives and 16 improve Hoosier health; 17 Whereas, Brad Burk has successfully worked alongside 18 members of the Indiana General Assembly and the U.S. 19 Congress to pass impactful legislation aimed at preventing, 20 detecting, and treating cancer; 21 Whereas, Over his 25-year tenure at ACS, Brad Burk has led 22 fundraising efforts to secure over $150 million in the fight 23 against cancer; 24 Whereas, Over the past 25 years, the American Cancer 25 Society has invested over $40 million in extramural cancer 2023 HC 1047/DI 140 2 1 research in Indiana; 2 Whereas, Due to advancements made in the fight against 3 cancer, Indiana now celebrates 366,000 current living cancer 4 survivors; 5 Whereas, Throughout Brad Burk's tenure at ACS, cancer 6 mortality rates have declined 1% each year for an overall 7 decline of 25% since 1998; 8 Whereas, Under Brad Burk's leadership, cancer information, 9 resources, protections and innovations have been made 10 available to Hoosiers in all 92 counties; and 11 Whereas, Brad Burk should be commended by the Hoosier 12 State for 25 years of devoted service to the people of Indiana. 13 His dedication to preventing cancer, saving lives, and 14 improving health outcomes and overall quality of life are noble 15 and worthy of recognition: Therefore, 16 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives 17 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana, 18 the Senate concurring: 19 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly recognizes 20 and celebrates Brad Burk's 25-year career anniversary with the 21 American Cancer Society and highlights his profound statewide 22 impact on the lives of all Hoosiers. 23 SECTION 2.
