7	7	1 A HOUSE RESOLUTION honoring the 100th anniversary
8	8	2 of Methodist Hospital of Gary, Indiana.
9	9	3 Whereas, Margaret Pritchard, a registered nurse who served
10	10	4 in South Africa's Boer War, established the nursing
11	11	5 school-turned-hospital in Gary, Indiana, in 1911. In May 1923,
12	12	6 the new building opened under the name "Methodist Episcopal
13	13	7 Hospital". It was dedicated by Bishop Frederick D. Leet;
14	14	8 Whereas, In its first full year, Methodist Hospital saw 2,087
15	15	9 patients admitted, 299 babies born, and 1,115 operations
16	16	10 performed;
17	17	11 Whereas, In 1942, the hospital separated from the Methodist
18	18	12 Hospital Board in Indianapolis, becoming "The Methodist
19	19	13 Hospital of Gary, Inc.";

22	22	1 Whereas, During the polio epidemic of the 1940s and 1950s,
23	23	2 The Methodist Hospital of Gary was the only local hospital to
24	24	3 accept polio patients;
25	25	4 Whereas, Methodist was the first hospital in Lake County to
26	26	5 have a physical therapy department and offered the first
27	27	6 psychiatric unit;
28	28	7 Whereas, In June 1967, the Methodist Hospital School of
29	29	8 Nursing graduated its last class, and had trained over 700
30	30	9 registered nurses since the 1923 opening;
31	31	10 Whereas, The Broadway Methodist opened December 13,
32	32	11 1975. The hospitals established themselves as a single entity in
33	33	12 1981, comprising of the Northlake Campus in Gary and the
34	34	13 Southlake Campus in Merrillville. The Midlake Campus would
35	35	14 join this entity in 2003;
36	36	15 Whereas, The first Gamma Knife Center in Northwest
37	37	16 Indiana opened at the Southlake Campus in 2003, becoming
38	38	17 one of two hospitals in the state to have this sophisticated piece
39	39	18 of machinery. It was also the first hospital in Northwest Indiana
40	40	19 with flat panel biplane technology, which is the gold standard
41	41	20 for stroke treatment and neurovascular intervention;
42	42	21 Whereas, Methodist Hospital's Heart and Vascular Institute
43	43	22 has had full accreditation as a chest pain center since 2015,
44	44	23 and it has been accredited as a comprehensive cancer program
45	45	24 since 1973, received Magnet recognition for nursing
46	46	25 excellence, and earned MBSAQIP full accreditation for its
47	47	26 bariatric surgery program in 2023;
48	48	27 Whereas, The Methodist Hospital of Gary, Indiana, has
49	49	28 always been a leader and pioneer in the medical field since its
50	50	29 formation in 1923; and
51	51	30 Whereas, The Methodist Hospital has been providing
52	52	31 exemplary healthcare service to the people of Northwest
53	53	32 Indiana for 100 years; Therefore,
54	54	33 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the
55	55	34 General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

58	58	1 SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives
59	59	2 honors Methodist Hospital of Gary, Indiana, on its 100th
60	60	3 anniversary.
61	61	4 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
62	62	5 Representatives shall transmit copies of the resolution to the
63	63	6 office of State Representative Vernon Smith.
