*HR1546* Introduced Version HOUSE RESOLUTION No. ___ Introduced by: Smith V ____________________________________ 1 A HOUSE RESOLUTION honoring the 100th anniversary 2 of Methodist Hospital of Gary, Indiana. 3 Whereas, Margaret Pritchard, a registered nurse who served 4 in South Africa's Boer War, established the nursing 5 school-turned-hospital in Gary, Indiana, in 1911. In May 1923, 6 the new building opened under the name "Methodist Episcopal 7 Hospital". It was dedicated by Bishop Frederick D. Leet; 8 Whereas, In its first full year, Methodist Hospital saw 2,087 9 patients admitted, 299 babies born, and 1,115 operations 10 performed; 11 Whereas, In 1942, the hospital separated from the Methodist 12 Hospital Board in Indianapolis, becoming "The Methodist 13 Hospital of Gary, Inc."; 20232780 HR 1546/DI 146 2023 2 1 Whereas, During the polio epidemic of the 1940s and 1950s, 2 The Methodist Hospital of Gary was the only local hospital to 3 accept polio patients; 4 Whereas, Methodist was the first hospital in Lake County to 5 have a physical therapy department and offered the first 6 psychiatric unit; 7 Whereas, In June 1967, the Methodist Hospital School of 8 Nursing graduated its last class, and had trained over 700 9 registered nurses since the 1923 opening; 10 Whereas, The Broadway Methodist opened December 13, 11 1975. The hospitals established themselves as a single entity in 12 1981, comprising of the Northlake Campus in Gary and the 13 Southlake Campus in Merrillville. The Midlake Campus would 14 join this entity in 2003; 15 Whereas, The first Gamma Knife Center in Northwest 16 Indiana opened at the Southlake Campus in 2003, becoming 17 one of two hospitals in the state to have this sophisticated piece 18 of machinery. It was also the first hospital in Northwest Indiana 19 with flat panel biplane technology, which is the gold standard 20 for stroke treatment and neurovascular intervention; 21 Whereas, Methodist Hospital's Heart and Vascular Institute 22 has had full accreditation as a chest pain center since 2015, 23 and it has been accredited as a comprehensive cancer program 24 since 1973, received Magnet recognition for nursing 25 excellence, and earned MBSAQIP full accreditation for its 26 bariatric surgery program in 2023; 27 Whereas, The Methodist Hospital of Gary, Indiana, has 28 always been a leader and pioneer in the medical field since its 29 formation in 1923; and 30 Whereas, The Methodist Hospital has been providing 31 exemplary healthcare service to the people of Northwest 32 Indiana for 100 years; Therefore, 33 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the 34 General Assembly of the State of Indiana: 20232780 HR 1546/DI 146 2023 3 1 SECTION 1.
