Synopsis:  Core 40 curriculum model. Provides that, if a Core 40
curriculum model adopted by the state board of education includes
Algebra II as a math course requirement for graduation with an Indiana
diploma with a Core 40 designation, the state board must amend the
Core 40 curriculum model to provide that a student satisfies the math
course requirement by successfully completing either: (1) an Algebra
II course; or (2) a personal finance course.
Effective:  July 1, 2023.

SENATE BILL No. 68
A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning
education.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
1 SECTION 1. IC 20-30-10-2.5, AS ADDED BY P.L.192-2018,
2 SECTION 18, IS AMENDED TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE
3 JULY 1, 2023]: Sec. 2.5. (a) Subject to subsection (b), in adopting
4 Core 40 curriculum models under this chapter, the state board shall
5 consider math course requirements other than Algebra II.
6 (b) If a Core 40 curriculum model adopted by the state board
7 includes Algebra II as a math course requirement for graduation
8 with an Indiana diploma with a Core 40 designation described in
9 IC 20-19-2-21(b)(2), the state board must amend the Core 40
10 curriculum model to provide that a student satisfies the math
11 course requirement by successfully completing either:
12 (1) an Algebra II course; or
13 (2) a personal finance course.
14 (c) Any math course requirements adopted for the Core 40
15 curriculum models must be at a level of difficulty that aligns with
16 postsecondary preparation.
17 (b) (d) If a school offers a math course developed under subsection

1 (a) or a personal finance course described in subsection (b), a parent
2 of a student and the student who intends to enroll in the course must
3 provide consent to the school to enroll in the course. The consent form
4 used by the school, which shall be developed by the state board in
5 collaboration with the commission for higher education, must notify the
6 parent and the student that enrollment in the course may affect the
7 student's ability to attend a particular postsecondary educational
8 institution or enroll in a particular course at a particular postsecondary
9 educational institution because the course does not align with academic
10 requirements established by the postsecondary educational institution.
11 (c) (e) The state board shall adopt rules under IC 4-22-2 to establish:
12 (1) math course requirements; and
13 (2) science course requirements;
14 for the Core 40 curriculum models adopted under this chapter.
