1313 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION celebrating the 100th
1414 2 anniversary of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.
1515 3 Whereas, The Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the oldest
1616 4 continually operating orchestra in the state of Indiana, was
1717 5 founded by Columbus native Chester Kitzinger in 1922 and
1818 6 evolved from the expansion of his Sunday school orchestra at
1919 7 the Tabernacle Christian Church of Columbus;
2020 8 Whereas, In 1923, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra
2121 9 played its premiere concert on May 17, 1923, at the Crump
2222 10 Theater in Columbus, Indiana;

2424 12 Whereas, During its 100-year history, the Columbus
2525 13 Symphony's five music directors have included Chester
2626 14 Kitzinger from 1923 to 1970, Dale Spurlock from 1970 to 1992,
2727 15 Arkady Orlovsky from 1992 to 2010, Roger Kalia from 2010 to
2828 16 2014, and Josh Aerie, who began directing in 2015 and
2929 17 remains at the podium through the centennial;
3030 18 Whereas, The Columbus Symphony Orchestra is a
3131 19 primarily volunteer orchestra with the mission of engaging with
3232 20 the greater Columbus community by furthering musical
3333 21 excellence for education and enjoyment;
3434 22 Whereas, Volunteers who perform at the symphony include
3535 23 working professionals, educators, engineers, students, and
3636 24 other musicians of all ages and walks of life;
3737 25 Whereas, In addition to musical performances, the

3939 1 Columbus Symphony Orchestra holds the annual Laura
4040 2 Showalter Youth Concerto Competition, in which high
4141 3 school-aged musicians compete for an academic scholarship,
4242 4 and hosts an annual composition competition, in which
4343 5 composers submit scores to receive a world premiere
4444 6 performance of their work and a monetary prize;
4545 7 Whereas, The Columbus Symphony Orchestra will continue
4646 8 celebrating their landmark centennial celebration with concerts
4747 9 on April 23, 2023, and June 4, 2023; and
4848 10 Whereas, It is an honor to recognize the Columbus
4949 11 Symphony Orchestra during its historic 100th season:

5151 13 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly
5252 14 of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives
5353 15 concurring:
5454 16 SECTION 1. The Indiana General Assembly celebrates the
5555 17 100th anniversary of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.
5656 18 SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed
5757 19 to transmit copies of this Resolution to the Columbus
5858 20 Symphony Orchestra board and board officers, Christopher
5959 21 Clerc, the Bartholomew County Historical Society, the
6060 22 Bartholomew County Public Library, the family of G. Chester
6161 23 Kitzinger, the family of Dale Spurlock, Arkady Orlovsky,
6262 24 Roger Ralia, and Josh Aerie.
