RESOLUTION No. _____ 
1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION celebrating the 100th
2 anniversary of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.
3 Whereas, The Columbus Symphony Orchestra, the oldest
4 continually operating orchestra in the state of Indiana, was
5 founded by Columbus native Chester Kitzinger in 1922 and
6 evolved from the expansion of his Sunday school orchestra at
7 the Tabernacle Christian Church of Columbus;
8 Whereas, In 1923, the Columbus Symphony Orchestra
9 played its premiere concert on May 17, 1923, at the Crump
10 Theater in Columbus, Indiana;

12 Whereas, During its 100-year history, the Columbus
13 Symphony's five music directors have included Chester
14 Kitzinger from 1923 to 1970, Dale Spurlock from 1970 to 1992,
15 Arkady Orlovsky from 1992 to 2010, Roger Kalia from 2010 to
16 2014, and Josh Aerie, who began directing in 2015 and
17 remains at the podium through the centennial;
18 Whereas, The Columbus Symphony Orchestra is a
19 primarily volunteer orchestra with the mission of engaging with
20 the greater Columbus community by furthering musical
21 excellence for education and enjoyment;
22 Whereas, Volunteers who perform at the symphony include
23 working professionals, educators, engineers, students, and
24 other musicians of all ages and walks of life;
25 Whereas, In addition to musical performances, the

1 Columbus Symphony Orchestra holds the annual Laura
2 Showalter Youth Concerto Competition, in which high
3 school-aged musicians compete for an academic scholarship,
4 and hosts an annual composition competition, in which
5 composers submit scores to receive a world premiere
6 performance of their work and a monetary prize;
7 Whereas, The Columbus Symphony Orchestra will continue
8 celebrating their landmark centennial celebration with concerts
9 on April 23, 2023, and June 4, 2023; and
10 Whereas, It is an honor to recognize the Columbus
11 Symphony Orchestra during its historic 100th season: 
12 Therefore,
13 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly
14 of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives
15	concurring:
16 SECTION 1. The Indiana General Assembly celebrates the
17 100th anniversary of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra.
18 SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed
19 to transmit copies of this Resolution to the Columbus
20 Symphony Orchestra board and board officers, Christopher
21 Clerc, the Bartholomew County Historical Society, the
22 Bartholomew County Public Library, the family of G. Chester
23 Kitzinger, the family of Dale Spurlock, Arkady Orlovsky,
24 Roger Ralia, and Josh Aerie.
