2424 A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning
2525 education.
2626 Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
2727 1 SECTION 1. IC 20-30-17-5 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE
2828 2 AS A NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY
2929 3 1, 2024]: Sec. 5. (a) Except as provided in subsection (b), a school,
3030 4 an employee or staff member of a school, or a third party vendor
3131 5 used by a school to provide instruction may not provide instruction
3232 6 to a student in kindergarten through grade 12 concerning:
3333 7 (1) Christopher Columbus; or
3434 8 (2) a President of the United States who owned an enslaved
3535 9 person.
3636 10 (b) Instruction concerning a person described in subsection
3737 11 (a)(1) or (a)(2) is permitted if the instruction concerns the person's
3838 12 involvement in the:
3939 13 (1) institution of slavery;
4040 14 (2) harmful effects of colonialism; or
4141 15 (3) decimation of indigenous populations throughout the
4242 16 world.
