HOUSE BILL No. 1017
A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning
education.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
1 SECTION 1. IC 20-30-17-5 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE
2 AS A NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY
3 1, 2024]: Sec. 5. (a) Except as provided in subsection (b), a school,
4 an employee or staff member of a school, or a third party vendor
5 used by a school to provide instruction may not provide instruction
6 to a student in kindergarten through grade 12 concerning:
7 (1) Christopher Columbus; or
8 (2) a President of the United States who owned an enslaved
9 person.
10 (b) Instruction concerning a person described in subsection
11 (a)(1) or (a)(2) is permitted if the instruction concerns the person's
12 involvement in the:
13 (1) institution of slavery;
14 (2) harmful effects of colonialism; or
15 (3) decimation of indigenous populations throughout the
16 world.
