Bauer M _______________________, read first time and referred to Committee on 20242277 2024 HC 1027/DI 140 Introduced Second Regular Session of the 123rd General Assembly (2024) HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION No. ____ 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION honoring the members 2 of the South Bend Fire Department for their bravery and heroic 3 actions while responding to a house fire. 4 Whereas, On the evening of January 21, 2024, the South Bend 5 Fire Department responded to a residential fire with intense 6 flames engulfing both the first and second floors of the home; 7 Whereas, Engine 2 was the first company on the scene, and it 8 immediately initiated a rapid attack to advance into the heart 9 of the blaze; 10 Whereas, After suppressing a significant portion of the fire on 11 the first floor, firefighters proceeded to the second floor, where 12 multiple victims were reported to be trapped; 13 Whereas, Amidst overwhelming heat and smoke from the fire, 14 the firefighters located and extracted a total of six victims, all 15 of whom were children; 16 Whereas, Tragically, all six children, varying from ages 17 17 months to 11 years, would later be pronounced deceased with 18 one child surviving for almost five days after the fire; 19 Whereas, The crew members of Engine 2 showed immense 20 courage and dedication in their attempts to save these young 21 lives by exhibiting a profound disregard for their own safety in 22 the face of extreme danger; 23 Whereas, One member of Engine 2 fell through the second 24 floor onto the first while attempting to rescue the victims, and 2024 HC 1027/DI 140 2 1 he was transported to a local hospital and is expected to make 2 a full recovery; and 3 Whereas, The actions of the firefighters of Engine 2 reflect the 4 highest ideals of selflessness and citizens-first ethos that is 5 characteristic of the bravery needed to be a firefighter: 6 Therefore, 7 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives 8 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana, 9 the Senate concurring: 10 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly honors the 11 members of the South Bend Fire Department for their bravery 12 and heroic actions while responding to a house fire, and 13 remembers the young victims who tragically lost their lives in 14 that fire. 15 SECTION 2.
