1111 3 Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of our nation's
1212 4 truly great leaders;
1313 5 Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. changed our nation
1414 6 forever through his leadership, service, and clarity of vision;
1515 7 Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had many dreams: of
1616 8 an America where "justice rolls down like waters and
1717 9 righteousness like a mighty stream"; where neighbors look
1818 10 "beyond the external accidents and discern those inner qualities
1919 11 that make all men human and, therefore, brothers"; and of a
2020 12 time when "this nation will rise up and live out the true

2323 1 meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident:
2424 2 that all men are created equal.'";
2525 3 Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dreamt of a better
2626 4 society where "the sons of former slaves and the sons of former
2727 5 slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of
2828 6 brotherhood";
2929 7 Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. believed that liberty,
3030 8 justice, and freedom were the "inalienable rights" to which all
3131 9 men, women, and children are entitled;
3232 10 Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a spiritual man
3333 11 who believed that all people are created equal in the sight of
3434 12 God and in the dignity and self-worth of every individual;
3535 13 Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his life defending
3636 14 his beliefs;
3737 15 Whereas, The visions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. continue
3838 16 to bring hope and inspiration to people of all nations;
3939 17 Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a recipient of the
4040 18 Nobel Peace Prize, is a national hero whose birthday is
4141 19 celebrated as a day of peace, love, and understanding by a
4242 20 grateful nation in the form of a national holiday, as well as a
4343 21 state holiday in Indiana; and
4444 22 Whereas, All Americans must continue to gather inspiration
4545 23 from the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and strive to realize
4646 24 his dreams: Therefore,
4747 25 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the
4848 26 General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
4949 27 SECTION 1. That it is fitting and proper that Dr. Martin
5050 28 Luther King Jr. be remembered and recognized by future
5151 29 generations of Americans and that all citizens of Indiana honor
5252 30 Dr. King by living out his teachings as we continue to work
5353 31 toward a day when the dignity and humanity of every person are
5454 32 respected.
