*HR1501* Introduced Version HOUSE RESOLUTION No. ___ Introduced by: Smith V, Cash, Haggard, Sweet, Bartlett, Harris, Hatcher, Jackson, Pack, Porter, Pryor, Shackleford, Summers ____________________________________ 1 A HOUSE RESOLUTION commemorating Dr. Martin 2 Luther King Jr. Day. 3 Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was one of our nation's 4 truly great leaders; 5 Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. changed our nation 6 forever through his leadership, service, and clarity of vision; 7 Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had many dreams: of 8 an America where "justice rolls down like waters and 9 righteousness like a mighty stream"; where neighbors look 10 "beyond the external accidents and discern those inner qualities 11 that make all men human and, therefore, brothers"; and of a 12 time when "this nation will rise up and live out the true 20241233 HR 1501/DI 140 2024 2 1 meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident: 2 that all men are created equal.'"; 3 Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. dreamt of a better 4 society where "the sons of former slaves and the sons of former 5 slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of 6 brotherhood"; 7 Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. believed that liberty, 8 justice, and freedom were the "inalienable rights" to which all 9 men, women, and children are entitled; 10 Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a spiritual man 11 who believed that all people are created equal in the sight of 12 God and in the dignity and self-worth of every individual; 13 Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his life defending 14 his beliefs; 15 Whereas, The visions of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. continue 16 to bring hope and inspiration to people of all nations; 17 Whereas, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a recipient of the 18 Nobel Peace Prize, is a national hero whose birthday is 19 celebrated as a day of peace, love, and understanding by a 20 grateful nation in the form of a national holiday, as well as a 21 state holiday in Indiana; and 22 Whereas, All Americans must continue to gather inspiration 23 from the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and strive to realize 24 his dreams: Therefore, 25 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the 26 General Assembly of the State of Indiana: 27 SECTION 1. That it is fitting and proper that Dr. Martin 28 Luther King Jr. be remembered and recognized by future 29 generations of Americans and that all citizens of Indiana honor 30 Dr. King by living out his teachings as we continue to work 31 toward a day when the dignity and humanity of every person are 32 respected. 33 SECTION 2.
