*HR1531* Introduced Version HOUSE RESOLUTION No. ___ Introduced by: Steuerwald ____________________________________ 1 A HOUSE RESOLUTION honoring Representative Jerry 2 Torr. 3 Whereas, Representative Jerry Torr, who was first elected to 4 represent the citizens of House District 39 in 1996, will be 5 leaving the House Chamber for the last time at the end of the 6 2024 Legislative Session; 7 Whereas, During his time in the House of Representatives, 8 Representative Torr has served in a multitude of roles, but he 9 currently serves as Vice Chair of the House Judiciary 10 Committee, Vice Chair of the House Joint Rules Committee, 11 and is a member of the House Employment, Labor and 12 Pensions Committee and the House Rules and Legislative 13 Procedures Committee; 14 Whereas, Representative Torr has authored several notable 20242295 HR 1531/DI 140 2024 2 1 laws including moving Indiana to Daylight Saving Time, the 2 right-to-work law giving Hoosier workers the freedom to 3 choose whether to financially support a union, and a law that 4 repealed the common construction wage in order to save 5 taxpayer dollars on the cost of public projects. He is a strong 6 advocate of eliminating the practice of gerrymandering in 7 Indiana through legislative proposals that would create a 8 bipartisan commission to draw new Indiana House of 9 Representatives and Indiana State Senate districts, ensuring 10 that districts are drawn in the interest of constituents rather 11 than in the interest of political parties and incumbent 12 legislators; 13 Whereas, Representative Torr has been honored twice as 14 Government Leader of the Year by the Indiana Chamber of 15 Commerce at its annual awards dinner, first in 2005 and again 16 in 2012. The only other two-time winners are former House 17 Speaker Brian Bosma and late U.S. Senator Richard Lugar; 18 Whereas, In addition to his service as a state representative, 19 Representative Torr is currently a member of the OneZone, 20 which is the combined Carmel and Fishers Chambers of 21 Commerce, is a former precinct committeeman, has been a 22 delegate to numerous Republican state conventions, and has 23 served on the board of directors of the National MS Society 24 Indiana Chapter, Indiana Humanities, and Carmel Symphony 25 Orchestra; 26 Whereas, Representative Torr is a sixth generation Hoosier 27 who has a strong love for music and music composition, and he 28 has conducted an original composition that was performed by 29 the Carmel Symphony Orchestra at the Palladium in Carmel; 30 and 31 Whereas, Representative Torr has served his constituency 32 loyally and faithfully since his election to the House of 33 Representatives: Therefore, 34 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the 35 General Assembly of the State of Indiana: 36 SECTION 1.
