Slager FUNDS AFFECTED: GENERAL IMPACT: State XDEDICATED FEDERAL Summary of Legislation: The bill provides that when an individual registers a vehicle, the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) shall provide notice that a person who operates a vehicle and who recklessly passes a school bus stopped on a roadway or a private road when the arm signal device is in the device's extended position commits a Class A misdemeanor. Effective Date: July 1, 2024. Explanation of State Expenditures: The bill would also require the BMV to notify all individuals who register a motor vehicle that recklessly passing a school bus with an extended stop arm is punishable as a Class A misdemeanor. Increases in workload are expected to be accomplished within existing resource and funding levels. Additional Information - Under current law, an individual who operates a vehicle that passes a school bus with an extended stop arm commits a Class A infraction under IC 9-21-12-1. Individuals who recklessly pass a school bus commit a Class A misdemeanor under IC 9-21-8-52(b).
