39 | 39 | | 5 Sec. 1. As used in this chapter, "authority" refers to the Indiana |

42 | 42 | | 8 Sec. 2. As used in this chapter, "food desert" means an |
---|
43 | 43 | | 9 underserved geographic area where fresh and nutritious foods are |
---|
44 | 44 | | 10 difficult to obtain, as determined by the authority. The term |
---|
45 | 45 | | 11 includes: |

46 | 46 | | 12 (1) a rural town or urban neighborhood in which: |
---|
47 | 47 | | 13 (A) at least twenty-five percent (25%) of the households |
---|
48 | 48 | | 14 have incomes that are below the federal income poverty |
---|
49 | 49 | | 15 level (as defined in IC 12-15-2-1); or |
---|
50 | 50 | | 16 (B) the median family income of residents is not more than |
---|
51 | 51 | | 17 eighty percent (80%) of the median family income of |
---|

70 | 70 | | 18 (2) education in food preparation and nutrition; |

72 | 72 | | 20 (b) The authority shall promote the sharing of information |

73 | 73 | | 21 concerning best practices and programs, including projects under |

74 | 74 | | 22 this chapter, that have proven to be effective in improving |

---|

77 | 77 | | 25 Sec. 5. (a) Not later than November 1, 2024, and each November |
---|
78 | 78 | | 26 1 thereafter, the authority shall convene an annual meeting of |
---|
79 | 79 | | 27 nonprofit organizations and other interested parties to share best |
---|
80 | 80 | | 28 practices and information on programs, including projects under |
---|
81 | 81 | | 29 this chapter, that have proven to be effective in improving |
---|
82 | 82 | | 30 distribution of fresh and nutritious food and education in food |
---|

84 | 84 | | 32 (b) Not later than December 1, 2024, and each December 1 |

85 | 85 | | 33 thereafter, the authority shall submit to the lieutenant governor |

86 | 86 | | 34 and legislative council in an electronic format under IC 5-14-6 a |

87 | 87 | | 35 report concerning the annual meeting described in subsection (a), |
