18 | 18 | | 5 United States of America will occur on July 4, 2026; |

19 | 19 | | 6 Whereas, The United States Congress established the U.S. |

20 | 20 | | 7 Semiquincentennial Commission to coordinate the |
---|
21 | 21 | | 8 commemoration and observation of the 250th Anniversary of |
---|
22 | 22 | | 9 the founding of the United States and related events; |

23 | 23 | | 10 Whereas, The Indiana General Assembly on July 1, 2022, |
---|
24 | 24 | | 11 established the Indiana Semiquincentennial Commission to |
---|
25 | 25 | | 12 coordinate the commemoration and observation of the 250th |
---|
26 | 26 | | 13 Anniversary of our Nation's founding; |
---|
27 | 27 | | 14 Whereas, We must not forget the three Indiana Territory |
---|
28 | 28 | | 15 settlers, Squire Boone, George Mason, and Francois Busseron |
---|
29 | 29 | | 16 and their contributions to the American Revolution; |
---|
30 | 30 | | 17 Whereas, Although not officially recognized as such until |
---|
31 | 31 | | 18 1787, the territory northwest of the Ohio River was commonly |
---|
32 | 32 | | 19 known as the Northwest Territory and was largely uncontested |
---|
33 | 33 | | 20 during the early years of the American Revolution; |
---|
34 | 34 | | 21 Whereas, We must not forget the contributions of the Native |
---|
35 | 35 | | 22 American tribes that fought alongside early Americans against |
---|
36 | 36 | | 23 British rule, such as the Oneida and Tuscarora Nations; |

38 | 38 | | 1 Whereas, In February of 1779, George Rogers Clark |
---|
39 | 39 | | 2 captured Fort Sackville (Vincennes). In March of that same |

40 | 40 | | 3 year, an American detachment from Vincennes captured a |

41 | 41 | | 4 British reinforcement fleet of seven boats carrying 40 soldiers, |
---|
42 | 42 | | 5 valuable supplies, and trade goods. These actions destroyed |
---|
43 | 43 | | 6 much of the British military strength in the Wabash Valley and |
---|
44 | 44 | | 7 marked the beginning of the end of British domination in |
---|
45 | 45 | | 8 America’s western frontier; |

46 | 46 | | 9 Whereas, A total of four battles occurred during the |

47 | 47 | | 10 American Revolution on Indiana soil; |

48 | 48 | | 11 Whereas, Over 1,600 soldiers and patriots that served |
---|
49 | 49 | | 12 during the American Revolution are buried here in Indiana; |
---|
50 | 50 | | 13 Whereas, We acknowledge the contributions of the women |
---|
51 | 51 | | 14 of the American Revolution, such as Abigail Adams, Phillis |
---|
52 | 52 | | 15 Wheatley, Mary Ludwig Hays, and more, whose support helped |

53 | 53 | | 16 ensure American victory; |
---|
54 | 54 | | 17 Whereas, It is in the interest of the State to recognize |
---|
55 | 55 | | 18 Indiana's unique role in the American Revolution by |
---|
56 | 56 | | 19 undertaking commemorative activities that honor all Hoosiers |

57 | 57 | | 20 and enhance our collective understanding of the past, present, |
---|

59 | 59 | | 22 Whereas, We, the members of the Indiana General |

60 | 60 | | 23 Assembly of the State of Indiana, are committed to supporting |

61 | 61 | | 24 the work of the Indiana Semiquincentennial Commission and of |
