16 and their contributions to the American Revolution;

1 Whereas, In February of 1779, George Rogers Clark
2 captured Fort Sackville (Vincennes). In March of that same
3 year, an American detachment from Vincennes captured a
4 British reinforcement fleet of seven boats carrying 40 soldiers,
5 valuable supplies, and trade goods. These actions destroyed
6 much of the British military strength in the Wabash Valley and
7 marked the beginning of the end of British domination in
8 America’s western frontier;
9 Whereas, A total of four battles occurred during the
10 American Revolution on Indiana soil;
11 Whereas, Over 1,600 soldiers and patriots that served
12 during the American Revolution are buried here in Indiana;
13 Whereas, We acknowledge the contributions of the women
14 of the American Revolution, such as Abigail Adams, Phillis
15 Wheatley, Mary Ludwig Hays, and more, whose support helped
16 ensure American victory;
17 Whereas, It is in the interest of the State to recognize
18 Indiana's unique role in the American Revolution by
19 undertaking commemorative activities that honor all Hoosiers
20 and enhance our collective understanding of the past, present,
21 and future; and
22 Whereas, We, the members of the Indiana General
23 Assembly of the State of Indiana, are committed to supporting
24 the work of the Indiana Semiquincentennial Commission and of
25 the United States Semiquincentennial Commission and
26 participating fully and enthusiastically in the nation's 250th
