QADDOURA, RAATZ , read first time and referred to Committee on 2024 DC 1901/DI LF Introduced Second Regular Session 123rd General Assembly (2024) SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION No. _____ 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION to support the work of 2 the Indiana Semiquincentennial Commission for the 250th 3 Anniversary of the founding of the United States of America. 4 Whereas, The 250th Anniversary of the founding of the 5 United States of America will occur on July 4, 2026; 6 Whereas, The United States Congress established the U.S. 7 Semiquincentennial Commission to coordinate the 8 commemoration and observation of the 250th Anniversary of 9 the founding of the United States and related events; 10 Whereas, The Indiana General Assembly on July 1, 2022, 11 established the Indiana Semiquincentennial Commission to 12 coordinate the commemoration and observation of the 250th 13 Anniversary of our Nation's founding; 14 Whereas, We must not forget the three Indiana Territory 15 settlers, Squire Boone, George Mason, and Francois Busseron 16 and their contributions to the American Revolution; 17 Whereas, Although not officially recognized as such until 18 1787, the territory northwest of the Ohio River was commonly 19 known as the Northwest Territory and was largely uncontested 20 during the early years of the American Revolution; 21 Whereas, We must not forget the contributions of the Native 22 American tribes that fought alongside early Americans against 23 British rule, such as the Oneida and Tuscarora Nations; 2024 DC 1901/DI LF 2 1 Whereas, In February of 1779, George Rogers Clark 2 captured Fort Sackville (Vincennes). In March of that same 3 year, an American detachment from Vincennes captured a 4 British reinforcement fleet of seven boats carrying 40 soldiers, 5 valuable supplies, and trade goods. These actions destroyed 6 much of the British military strength in the Wabash Valley and 7 marked the beginning of the end of British domination in 8 America’s western frontier; 9 Whereas, A total of four battles occurred during the 10 American Revolution on Indiana soil; 11 Whereas, Over 1,600 soldiers and patriots that served 12 during the American Revolution are buried here in Indiana; 13 Whereas, We acknowledge the contributions of the women 14 of the American Revolution, such as Abigail Adams, Phillis 15 Wheatley, Mary Ludwig Hays, and more, whose support helped 16 ensure American victory; 17 Whereas, It is in the interest of the State to recognize 18 Indiana's unique role in the American Revolution by 19 undertaking commemorative activities that honor all Hoosiers 20 and enhance our collective understanding of the past, present, 21 and future; and 22 Whereas, We, the members of the Indiana General 23 Assembly of the State of Indiana, are committed to supporting 24 the work of the Indiana Semiquincentennial Commission and of 25 the United States Semiquincentennial Commission and 26 participating fully and enthusiastically in the nation's 250th 27 anniversary: Therefore, 28 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly 29 of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives 30 concurring: 2024 DC 1901/DI LF 3 1 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly honors the 2 250 th Anniversary of the founding of the United States of 3 America on July 4, 2026. 4 SECTION 2. That copies of this resolution be transmitted 5 by the Secretary of the Senate to The Indiana 6 Semiquincentennial Commission. 2024 DC 1901/DI LF
