A SENATE RESOLUTION to honor Senator Eddie Melton
upon his retirement from the Indiana Senate.

SENATE RESOLUTION ____
MADAM PRESIDENT:  
I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
1 A SENATE RESOLUTION to honor Senator Eddie Melton
2 upon his retirement from the Indiana Senate.
3 Whereas, Senator Eddie Melton faithfully and honorably
4 served the constituents of Senate District 3, encompassing
5 portions of Lake County since November 22, 2016;
6 Whereas, Senator Melton received a B.S. of Organizational
7 Management from Calumet College of St. Joseph;
8 Whereas, Senator Melton served as a manager of
9 Corporate Citizen and Community Relations for Northern
10 Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO).  Prior to joining
11 NIPSCO, Senator Melton worked as a grant officer for the
12 Legacy Foundation, Lake County's community foundation in
13 Northwest Indiana;
14 Whereas, Senator Melton has served as chairman of the
15 Indiana Commission on the Social Status of Black Males, has
16 served on the Indiana State Board of Education, and has served
17 as a national board member of the American Association of
18 Blacks in Energy (AABE);

1 Whereas, Senator Melton has been recognized as a national
2 leader in the area of youth mentoring, and in 2015, Senator
3 Melton worked with President Barack Obama's Administration
4 in implementing "My Brother's Keeper," an initiative designed
5 to address persistent opportunity gaps facing boys and young
6 men of color;
7 Whereas, In 2016 Senator Melton was selected to
8 participate in a fellowship program in Israel for national
9 African American leaders, sponsored by the American Israel
10 Education Foundation (AIEF), where Senator Melton explored
11 critical foreign policy and national security issues affecting
12 both Israel and the United States;
13 Whereas, Senator Melton was named as one of  "20 Under
14 40" young professionals in Northwest Indiana by the NWI
15 Times Media Company, was a South Shore Leadership Award
16 winner, and was chosen as the Freshman Legislator of the Year
17 by the Indiana Association of Rehabilitation Facilities.  He was
18 elected by lawmakers from around the country to serve on the
19 Executive Committee of the National Conference of State
20 Legislators and is a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity
21 Inc.;
22 Whereas, Senator Melton has served as Ranking Minority
23 member for the Senate committees on Education and Career
24 Development and Appropriations, a member of the committees
25 on Health and Provider Services, Public Policy, Tax and Fiscal
26 Policy, and a member of the School Funding Formula
27 Subcommittee; and
28 Whereas, Senator Melton lives in Gary, Indiana with his
29 wife, Crystal, and their four children:  Therefore,
30	Be it resolved by the Senate of the
31 General Assembly of the State of Indiana:

1 SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate honors Senator Eddie
2 Melton upon his retirement and thanks him for  his many years
3 of service to the Indiana Senate and Senate District 3.
4 SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby directed
5 to transmit a copy of this Resolution to Senator Eddie Melton.
