7	7	Synopsis: School transportation. Provides that the governing body of
8	8	a school corporation must minimize or eliminate school bus route stops
9	9	that require a student to cross certain roads. Provides that, not later than
10	10	July 1, 2026, and annually each year thereafter, the governing body of
11	11	a school corporation shall review school bus routes to ensure the
12	12	minimization or elimination of stops that require a student to cross
13	13	certain roads.

29	29	A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning
30	30	education.
31	31	Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
32	32	1 SECTION 1. IC 9-21-12-20.5, AS AMENDED BY P.L.92-2020,
33	33	2 SECTION 5, IS AMENDED TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE
34	34	3 JULY 1, 2025]: Sec. 20.5. (a) As used in this section, "elementary
35	35	4 school":
36	36	5 (1) has the meaning set forth in IC 20-18-2-4; and
37	37	6 (2) includes public elementary schools and state accredited
38	38	7 nonpublic elementary schools that voluntarily become accredited
39	39	8 under IC 20-31-4.1.
40	40	9 (b) As used in this section, "governing body" has the meaning set
41	41	10 forth in IC 20-18-2-5.
42	42	11 (c) As used in this section, "high school" has the meaning set
43	43	12 forth in IC 20-18-2-7.
44	44	13 (c) (d) If a school bus driver must load or unload an elementary
45	45	14 school or high school student at a location that requires the student to
46	46	15 cross a roadway that is a U.S. route or state route as described in
47	47	16 section 20(a)(1) or 20(a)(2) of this chapter, the superintendent or the
48	48	17 superintendent's designee shall present the school bus route described

50	50	1 in this subsection to the governing body for approval.
51	51	2 (e) The governing body shall minimize or eliminate school bus
52	52	3 route stops approved under subsection (d) that require a student
53	53	4 to cross a roadway described in section 20(a)(1) or 20(a)(2) of this
54	54	5 chapter.
55	55	6 (f) Not later than July 1, 2026, and annually each year
56	56	7 thereafter, the governing body shall review any school bus routes
57	57	8 approved under subsection (d) to ensure compliance with
58	58	9 subsection (e).
