Goss-Reaves _______________________, read first time and referred to Committee on 20253074 2025 HC 1040/DI 140 Introduced First Regular Session of the 124th General Assembly (2025) HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION No. ____ 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION recognizing March 21, 2 2025, as World Down Syndrome Day. 3 Whereas, World Down Syndrome Day is a global celebration 4 honoring the people living with Down syndrome, recognizing 5 their unique talents, contributions, and the love they bring to 6 their families and communities; 7 Whereas, The United Nations recognized World Down 8 Syndrome Day in 2012, and it has been observed annually on 9 March 21, symbolizing the triplication of the 21st chromosome 10 that causes Down syndrome; 11 Whereas, This special day serves as an opportunity to raise 12 awareness, promote inclusion, and highlight the value of 13 individuals with Down syndrome, ensuring they are supported 14 and given opportunities to reach their full potential; 15 Whereas, Down syndrome is the most common chromosomal 16 condition in the United States; 17 Whereas, An estimated 250,700 children, teens, and adults in 18 the United States live with Down syndrome; 19 Whereas, Down syndrome is not related to race, nationality, 20 religion, or socioeconomic status; 21 Whereas, With the right support, individuals with Down 22 syndrome lead healthy and fulfilling lives while making 23 meaningful contributions to their families and communities; 2025 HC 1040/DI 140 2 1 Whereas, World Down Syndrome Day encourages 2 participants from across the world to celebrate the 3 achievements, resilience, and aspirations of individuals with 4 Down syndrome; 5 Whereas, Groups, such as The Arc of Indiana and Down 6 Syndrome Indiana, help to recognize World Down Syndrome 7 Day by increasing awareness of Down syndrome and offering 8 support to individuals and families; 9 Whereas, These groups advocate for legislation, regulation, 10 and policies that make a positive difference in the lives of 11 Hoosiers with intellectual and other developmental disabilities 12 such as Down syndrome; 13 Whereas, In the spirit of raising awareness in a fun and 14 engaging way, the Rock Your Socks event encourages people to 15 wear brightly colored or mismatched socks, sparking 16 conversations and showing solidarity with the Down syndrome 17 community; and 18 Whereas, World Down Syndrome Day seeks to create a single 19 global voice for people living with Down syndrome and 20 increase awareness of the impact those with Down syndrome 21 have on their communities: Therefore, 22 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives 23 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana, 24 the Senate concurring: 25 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly recognizes 26 March 21, 2025, as World Down Syndrome Day. 27 SECTION 2.
