2323 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION encouraging a healthier

2525 3 Whereas, Chronic diseases, including diabetes, obesity, and
2626 4 heart disease, account for over 70 percent of health care costs
2727 5 and are the leading cause of death and disability in the United
2828 6 States, impacting millions of families and straining public
2929 7 resources;
3030 8 Whereas, The chronic disease epidemic especially harms
3131 9 young people, with almost 50 percent of all U.S. teens and
3232 10 young adults being overweight or obese, 77 percent of young
3333 11 adults being ineligible for military service, and 40 percent of
3434 12 high school students having a mental health disorder;
3535 13 Whereas, The epidemic continues into adulthood, where 60
3636 14 percent of Americans have a chronic disease, 90 percent of
3737 15 deaths are tied to preventable chronic diseases, and 90 percent
3838 16 of chronic diseases are reversible;
3939 17 Whereas, The root causes of chronic disease are linked to
4040 18 preventable factors such as poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyles,
4141 19 and lack of access to health education;
4242 20 Whereas, Encouraging better health empowers people and
4343 21 communities;
4444 22 Whereas, Emphasizing nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle
4545 23 medicine prevents and reverses chronic disease; and
4646 24 Whereas, Improving public health outcomes, reducing health

4848 1 care costs, and providing citizens with tools and resources
4949 2 leads to healthier and more productive living: Therefore,
5050 3 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives
5151 4 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana,
5252 5 the Senate concurring:
5353 6 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly supports a
5454 7 healthier citizenry through accessible whole, nonprocessed
5555 8 foods with an emphasis on high nutritional education.
5656 9 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
5757 10 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to the
5858 11 Governor of Indiana, the Indiana State Health Commissioner,
5959 12 and each member of the Indiana Congressional delegation.
