McGuire, Lauer, Miller D, Commons, May, King, Criswell, Shonkwiler, Soliday, Abbott, Pierce K, Olthoff, Heaton, Slager, Patterson, Heine, Smaltz, OBrien, Carbaugh, Smith H, DeVon, Goss-Reaves, Teshka, Baird, Sweet, Culp, McNamara, Shackleford, Pack, Andrade, Gore, Burton, Campbell, Jackson C, Pryor, Errington, Pierce M, Pfaff, Bartlett _______________________, read first time and referred to Committee on 20253071 2025 HC 1054/DI 140 Introduced First Regular Session of the 124th General Assembly (2025) HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTION No. ____ 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION encouraging a healthier 2 Indiana. 3 Whereas, Chronic diseases, including diabetes, obesity, and 4 heart disease, account for over 70 percent of health care costs 5 and are the leading cause of death and disability in the United 6 States, impacting millions of families and straining public 7 resources; 8 Whereas, The chronic disease epidemic especially harms 9 young people, with almost 50 percent of all U.S. teens and 10 young adults being overweight or obese, 77 percent of young 11 adults being ineligible for military service, and 40 percent of 12 high school students having a mental health disorder; 13 Whereas, The epidemic continues into adulthood, where 60 14 percent of Americans have a chronic disease, 90 percent of 15 deaths are tied to preventable chronic diseases, and 90 percent 16 of chronic diseases are reversible; 17 Whereas, The root causes of chronic disease are linked to 18 preventable factors such as poor nutrition, sedentary lifestyles, 19 and lack of access to health education; 20 Whereas, Encouraging better health empowers people and 21 communities; 22 Whereas, Emphasizing nutrition, exercise, and lifestyle 23 medicine prevents and reverses chronic disease; and 24 Whereas, Improving public health outcomes, reducing health 2025 HC 1054/DI 140 2 1 care costs, and providing citizens with tools and resources 2 leads to healthier and more productive living: Therefore, 3 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives 4 of the General Assembly of the State of Indiana, 5 the Senate concurring: 6 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly supports a 7 healthier citizenry through accessible whole, nonprocessed 8 foods with an emphasis on high nutritional education. 9 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of 10 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to the 11 Governor of Indiana, the Indiana State Health Commissioner, 12 and each member of the Indiana Congressional delegation. 2025 HC 1054/DI 140
