*HR1512* Introduced Version HOUSE RESOLUTION No. ___ Introduced by: Ledbetter, McGuire, Shonkwiler, Summers, Olthoff, Boy, Hamilton, Dant Chesser, Campbell, Pfaff, Patterson, Bauer M, King, Pryor, Jackson C, Pack, Shackleford, Rowray, McNamara, Sweet, Cash, Engleman, Gore, May, Morris, Andrade, Pierce M, Heaton, Karickhoff, Lucas, Isa, Clere, Thompson, Snow, Pierce K, OBrien, Pressel, Heine, Manning, Aylesworth, Commons, Miller D, Judy, Bartels, Genda ____________________________________ 1 A HOUSE RESOLUTION recognizing women's heart 2 health research and supporting awareness for cardiovascular 3 disease. 4 Whereas, Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of 5 death in women, claiming more lives than all forms of cancer 6 combined and yet only 44 percent of women recognize that 7 cardiovascular disease is their greatest health threat; 8 Whereas, Among women 20 years and older, nearly 45 20253005 HR 1512/DI 140 2025 2 1 percent are living with some form of cardiovascular disease 2 and less than half of women entering pregnancy in the United 3 States have optimal cardiovascular health; 4 Whereas, Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of 5 maternal death in the U.S. meaning heart disease is the number 6 one killer of new mothers; 7 Whereas, Overall, 10 to 20 percent of women will have a 8 health issue during pregnancy, and high blood pressure, 9 preeclampsia, and gestational diabetes during pregnancy 10 greatly increase a women's risk for developing cardiovascular 11 disease later in life; 12 Whereas, Most cardiac and stroke events can be prevented 13 through education and lifestyle changes, such as increasing 14 physical activity, eating smart, and managing blood pressure; 15 Whereas, In 2020, stroke caused the deaths of 90,627 16 women, approximately 56.5 percent of total stroke deaths; 17 Whereas, Women are often less likely to receive bystander 18 CPR because rescuers often fear accusations of inappropriate 19 touching, sexual assault, or injuring the victim; 20 Whereas, There are significant biological differences 21 between men and women, and clinical trials have not always 22 adequately enrolled women or analyzed sex-specific differences 23 in the data, and, as of 2020, only 38 percent of cardiovascular 24 clinical research trial participants are women; and 25 Whereas, Since 2004, the American Heart Association's "Go 26 Red for Women" movement has addressed the awareness and 27 clinical care gaps of women's greatest health threat, 28 cardiovascular disease, and, on the cusp of the American Heart 29 Association's 100th anniversary, continues to make bold moves 30 to save lives and pioneer scientific discoveries: Therefore, 31 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the 32 General Assembly of the State of Indiana: 33 SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives 20253005 HR 1512/DI 140 2025 3 1 recognizes February as American Heart Month in Indiana. 2 SECTION 2. That the Indiana House of Representatives 3 urges all Hoosiers to raise awareness about cardiovascular 4 disease, the leading cause of death in women, and show their 5 support for women and the fight against heart disease by 6 wearing the color red on February 6, 2025. 7 SECTION 3.
