88 1 A HOUSE RESOLUTION recognizing March 25, 2025, as
99 2 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Day at the Indiana
1010 3 Statehouse.
1111 4 Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, was
1212 5 founded on January 15, 1908, with a mission to promote unity
1313 6 and friendship among college women, to study and help
1414 7 alleviate problems concerning girls and women to improve
1515 8 their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in
1616 9 college life, and to be of "Service to All Mankind";
1717 10 Whereas, In 1915, the sorority hosted its first political action
1818 11 conference with Illinois Congressman and human rights activist
1919 12 Martin B. Madden as the speaker;
2020 13 Whereas, Through the years, the sorority's function has

2323 1 become more complex, branching out to engage members
2424 2 worldwide in advocacy and service projects to improve
2525 3 socioeconomic, racial, political, and environmental conditions;
2626 4 Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha's diverse, collaborative work
2727 5 throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa,
2828 6 and the United Arab Emirates integrates a high level of
2929 7 personal engagement with the strong bonds of sisterhood and
3030 8 a productive network of community partners;
3131 9 Whereas, On March 25, 2025, Indiana members of Alpha
3232 10 Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, will participate in "AKA
3333 11 Day at the Indiana State Capitol";
3434 12 Whereas, The annual event is an opportunity for members to
3535 13 speak with local lawmakers, engage in workshops, and
3636 14 advocate for critical issues, such as Black maternal health and
3737 15 suicide prevention;
3838 16 Whereas, Indiana is home to 23 Alpha Kappa Alpha
3939 17 chapters, eight of which are located on college and university
4040 18 campuses, and these chapters have 15 active alumnae groups
4141 19 in communities throughout the state;
4242 20 Whereas, The central region of the United States is home to
4343 21 96 empowered and engaged chapters serving Illinois, Indiana,
4444 22 Kentucky, Minnesota, southeastern Missouri, North Dakota,
4545 23 South Dakota, and Wisconsin; and
4646 24 Whereas, There are two members of Alpha Kappa Alpha
4747 25 currently serving in the Indiana General Assembly: Therefore,
4848 26 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the
4949 27 General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
5050 28 SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives
5151 29 recognizes March 25, 2025, as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,
5252 30 Incorporated, Day at the Indiana State Capitol.
5353 31 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of
5454 32 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to Alpha
5555 33 Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Alpha Mu Omega and Chi
5656 34 Chi Omega chapters, in recognition of all Indiana chapters.
