*HR1536* Introduced Version HOUSE RESOLUTION No. ___ Introduced by: Harris, Bartlett, Burton, Hatcher, Jackson C, Pack, Porter, Pryor, Shackleford, Smith V, Summers ____________________________________ 1 A HOUSE RESOLUTION recognizing March 25, 2025, as 2 Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Day at the Indiana 3 Statehouse. 4 Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, was 5 founded on January 15, 1908, with a mission to promote unity 6 and friendship among college women, to study and help 7 alleviate problems concerning girls and women to improve 8 their social stature, to maintain a progressive interest in 9 college life, and to be of "Service to All Mankind"; 10 Whereas, In 1915, the sorority hosted its first political action 11 conference with Illinois Congressman and human rights activist 12 Martin B. Madden as the speaker; 13 Whereas, Through the years, the sorority's function has 20253077 HR 1536/DI 140 2025 2 1 become more complex, branching out to engage members 2 worldwide in advocacy and service projects to improve 3 socioeconomic, racial, political, and environmental conditions; 4 Whereas, Alpha Kappa Alpha's diverse, collaborative work 5 throughout the United States, the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, 6 and the United Arab Emirates integrates a high level of 7 personal engagement with the strong bonds of sisterhood and 8 a productive network of community partners; 9 Whereas, On March 25, 2025, Indiana members of Alpha 10 Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, will participate in "AKA 11 Day at the Indiana State Capitol"; 12 Whereas, The annual event is an opportunity for members to 13 speak with local lawmakers, engage in workshops, and 14 advocate for critical issues, such as Black maternal health and 15 suicide prevention; 16 Whereas, Indiana is home to 23 Alpha Kappa Alpha 17 chapters, eight of which are located on college and university 18 campuses, and these chapters have 15 active alumnae groups 19 in communities throughout the state; 20 Whereas, The central region of the United States is home to 21 96 empowered and engaged chapters serving Illinois, Indiana, 22 Kentucky, Minnesota, southeastern Missouri, North Dakota, 23 South Dakota, and Wisconsin; and 24 Whereas, There are two members of Alpha Kappa Alpha 25 currently serving in the Indiana General Assembly: Therefore, 26 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives of the 27 General Assembly of the State of Indiana: 28 SECTION 1. That the Indiana House of Representatives 29 recognizes March 25, 2025, as Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, 30 Incorporated, Day at the Indiana State Capitol. 31 SECTION 2. That the Principal Clerk of the House of 32 Representatives shall transmit copies of this resolution to Alpha 33 Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Alpha Mu Omega and Chi 34 Chi Omega chapters, in recognition of all Indiana chapters. 20253077 HR 1536/DI 140 2025
