2929 A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning
3030 motor vehicles.
3131 Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
3232 1 SECTION 1. IC 9-19-14-2 IS AMENDED TO READ AS
3333 2 FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2025]: Sec. 2. Except as provided
3434 3 in section sections 5 and 5.1 of this chapter, an authorized emergency
3535 4 vehicle must, in addition to other equipment required by this article, be
3636 5 equipped with signal lamps that are capable of displaying flashing,
3737 6 rotating, or oscillating beams of red or red and white light. The lights
3838 7 must be visible to oncoming traffic one hundred eighty (180) degrees
3939 8 around the front of the vehicle.
4040 9 SECTION 2. IC 9-19-14-5.1 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE
4141 10 AS A NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY
4242 11 1, 2025]: Sec. 5.1. A firefighting apparatus owned or operated by
4343 12 a political subdivision or volunteer fire department (as defined in
4444 13 IC 36-8-12-2) may be equipped with signal lamps that are capable
4545 14 of displaying flashing, rotating, or oscillating beams of red and
4646 15 blue lights. The lights must be visible to oncoming traffic one
4747 16 hundred eighty (180) degrees around the front of the vehicle.
4848 17 SECTION 3. IC 9-19-14-5.5, AS AMENDED BY P.L.188-2015,

5050 1 SECTION 60, IS AMENDED TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE
5151 2 JULY 1, 2025]: Sec. 5.5. (a) Except for a:
5252 3 (1) vehicle utilized in a funeral procession; or
5353 4 (2) funeral escort vehicle bearing markings as described in
5454 5 IC 9-21-13-0.7;
5555 6 a vehicle that is not described by sections 2, or 5, or 5.1 of this chapter
5656 7 may not display a red and white lamp or a red and blue lamp.
5757 8 (b) A person who:
5858 9 (1) possesses a vehicle with equipment described by sections 2,
5959 10 or 5, or 5.1 of this chapter; and
6060 11 (2) is not authorized to display a red and white or red and blue
6161 12 lamp upon the vehicle;
6262 13 shall immediately remove the red and white or red and blue lamp from
6363 14 the vehicle.
6464 15 (c) A funeral escort vehicle, other than an authorized emergency
6565 16 vehicle used in a funeral procession or as a funeral escort vehicle, may
6666 17 display only red and white, red, or amber lights.
6767 18 (d) Except as provided in subsection (e), a person who fails to
6868 19 comply with subsection (b) or (c) commits a Class C misdemeanor.
6969 20 (e) Subsection (d) does not apply to a person who owns or operates
7070 21 a vehicle or combination of vehicles that:
7171 22 (1) contains parts and accessories; and
7272 23 (2) is equipped;
7373 24 as required under regulations of the United States Department of
7474 25 Transportation.
