SENATE BILL No. 124 A BILL FOR AN ACT to amend the Indiana Code concerning motor vehicles. Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of Indiana: 1 SECTION 1. IC 9-19-14-2 IS AMENDED TO READ AS 2 FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY 1, 2025]: Sec. 2. Except as provided 3 in section sections 5 and 5.1 of this chapter, an authorized emergency 4 vehicle must, in addition to other equipment required by this article, be 5 equipped with signal lamps that are capable of displaying flashing, 6 rotating, or oscillating beams of red or red and white light. The lights 7 must be visible to oncoming traffic one hundred eighty (180) degrees 8 around the front of the vehicle. 9 SECTION 2. IC 9-19-14-5.1 IS ADDED TO THE INDIANA CODE 10 AS A NEW SECTION TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE JULY 11 1, 2025]: Sec. 5.1. A firefighting apparatus owned or operated by 12 a political subdivision or volunteer fire department (as defined in 13 IC 36-8-12-2) may be equipped with signal lamps that are capable 14 of displaying flashing, rotating, or oscillating beams of red and 15 blue lights. The lights must be visible to oncoming traffic one 16 hundred eighty (180) degrees around the front of the vehicle. 17 SECTION 3. IC 9-19-14-5.5, AS AMENDED BY P.L.188-2015, 2025 IN 124—LS 6437/DI 137 2 1 SECTION 60, IS AMENDED TO READ AS FOLLOWS [EFFECTIVE 2 JULY 1, 2025]: Sec. 5.5. (a) Except for a: 3 (1) vehicle utilized in a funeral procession; or 4 (2) funeral escort vehicle bearing markings as described in 5 IC 9-21-13-0.7; 6 a vehicle that is not described by sections 2, or 5, or 5.1 of this chapter 7 may not display a red and white lamp or a red and blue lamp. 8 (b) A person who: 9 (1) possesses a vehicle with equipment described by sections 2, 10 or 5, or 5.1 of this chapter; and 11 (2) is not authorized to display a red and white or red and blue 12 lamp upon the vehicle; 13 shall immediately remove the red and white or red and blue lamp from 14 the vehicle. 15 (c) A funeral escort vehicle, other than an authorized emergency 16 vehicle used in a funeral procession or as a funeral escort vehicle, may 17 display only red and white, red, or amber lights. 18 (d) Except as provided in subsection (e), a person who fails to 19 comply with subsection (b) or (c) commits a Class C misdemeanor. 20 (e) Subsection (d) does not apply to a person who owns or operates 21 a vehicle or combination of vehicles that: 22 (1) contains parts and accessories; and 23 (2) is equipped; 24 as required under regulations of the United States Department of 25 Transportation. 2025 IN 124—LS 6437/DI 137
