1414 1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION congratulating the
1515 2 University of Notre Dame fencing team on winning the 2025
1616 3 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)
1717 4 Championship.
1818 5 Whereas, On March 23, 2025, The University of Notre
1919 6 Dame fencing program won its fourteenth national
2020 7 championship over a four day competition at Penn State;
2121 8 Whereas, The Notre Dame women's fencing team finished
2222 9 the 2024-2025 season with a 35-10 team record, 818-397 bout
2323 10 record, a sweep of all three weapons during the individual
2424 11 portions of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC)
2525 12 championships for the fourth straight season, and claimed the
2626 13 women's ninth ACC team title before competing at the NCAA
2727 14 Midwest Regional;
2828 15 Whereas, The Notre Dame men's team completed the
2929 16 season with a 37-6 record, 798-363 bout record, and their
3030 17 eighth ACC team title before competing alongside the Notre
3131 18 Dame women in the Regional;
3232 19 Whereas, At the NCAA Midwest Regional, Notre Dame
3333 20 fencing claimed all six gold medal spots, with Kaylin Hsieh and
3434 21 Maruan Osman Touson winning epee, Ariadna Tucker and
3535 22 Radu Nitu finishing first in foil, and Siobhan Sullivan and Liam
3636 23 Bas finishing first in sabre for the women's and men's,
3737 24 respectively;

3939 1 Whereas, As a result of their performance, the Notre Dame
4040 2 fencing program sent the maximum allotted twelve fencers to
4141 3 the NCAA Championships to compete in individual events, a
4242 4 round-robin format of five-touch bouts, semifinal 15-touch
4343 5 bouts, and final bouts in each weapon;
4444 6 Whereas, During the Championships, sophomore Eszter
4545 7 Muhari was perfect during her matches, going 23-0 in epee to
4646 8 earn the gold for the second time;
4747 9 Whereas, Freshman Magda Skarbonkiewicz finished as the
4848 10 number one seed after pool play in sabre, going 21-1, and
4949 11 eventually matched against freshman teammate Siobhan
5050 12 Sullivan in the sabre finals before Skarbonkiewicz defeated
5151 13 Sullivan 15-8 to win the title;
5252 14 Whereas, Sophomore Chase Emmer went 17-6 in the foil
5353 15 round-robin, earning the number two seed in the semifinal
5454 16 knockout round against teammate Ziyuan Chen before
5555 17 advancing to the final against Harvard's Andrew Chen, where
5656 18 he secured his first individual title with a final score of 15-10;
5757 19 Whereas, Under the direction of head coach Gia
5858 20 Kvaratskhelia, the Fighting Irish finished the Championship
5959 21 with 183 points, clenching their fourth team title in the last five
6060 22 years, sixth under Coach Kvaratskhelia, and fourteeth overall;
6161 23 Whereas, Mike DeCicco started as the men's team head
6262 24 coach in 1962, became co-ed head coach in 1977 with the
6363 25 addition of the women's team, and went on to the championship
6464 26 in 1977, 1978, and 1986;
6565 27 Whereas, Yves Auriol took over the women's team in 1986,
6666 28 won the 1987 women's championship, and coached side by side
6767 29 with DeCicco to win the national championship in 1994;

6969 1 Whereas, Head Coach Janusz Bednarski coached from
7070 2 2002-2014, where he led his team to be co-ed champions in
7171 3 2003, 2005, and 2011;
7272 4 Whereas, After the team championship and three individual
7373 5 titles, increasing their NCAA individual titles to 48, Notre
7474 6 Dame moved into a tie with Penn State for second place in
7575 7 NCAA history for most fencing national titles; and
7676 8 Whereas, Following the NCAA championship win, the
7777 9 Fighting Irish earned six of eight ACC fencing awards,
7878 10 including Fencer of the Year for Eszter Muhari (epee), Magda
7979 11 Skarbonkiewicz (sabre), Chase Emmer (foil), and Radu Nitu
8080 12 (sabre), while Coach Kvaratskhelia swept the coaching awards
8181 13 for both ACC Women’s and Men's Coach of the Year:

8383 15 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly
8484 16 of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives

8686 18 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly
8787 19 congratulates the Notre Dame fencing team on winning the
8888 20 2025 NCAA championship.
8989 21 SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby
9090 22 directed to transmit copies of this Resolution to all coaches
9191 23 and all members of the Notre Dame fencing team.
