14	14	1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION congratulating the
15	15	2 University of Notre Dame fencing team on winning the 2025
16	16	3 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)
17	17	4 Championship.
18	18	5 Whereas, On March 23, 2025, The University of Notre
19	19	6 Dame fencing program won its fourteenth national
20	20	7 championship over a four day competition at Penn State;
21	21	8 Whereas, The Notre Dame women's fencing team finished
22	22	9 the 2024-2025 season with a 35-10 team record, 818-397 bout
23	23	10 record, a sweep of all three weapons during the individual
24	24	11 portions of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC)
25	25	12 championships for the fourth straight season, and claimed the
26	26	13 women's ninth ACC team title before competing at the NCAA
27	27	14 Midwest Regional;
28	28	15 Whereas, The Notre Dame men's team completed the
29	29	16 season with a 37-6 record, 798-363 bout record, and their
30	30	17 eighth ACC team title before competing alongside the Notre
31	31	18 Dame women in the Regional;
32	32	19 Whereas, At the NCAA Midwest Regional, Notre Dame
33	33	20 fencing claimed all six gold medal spots, with Kaylin Hsieh and
34	34	21 Maruan Osman Touson winning epee, Ariadna Tucker and
35	35	22 Radu Nitu finishing first in foil, and Siobhan Sullivan and Liam
36	36	23 Bas finishing first in sabre for the women's and men's,
37	37	24 respectively;

39	39	1 Whereas, As a result of their performance, the Notre Dame
40	40	2 fencing program sent the maximum allotted twelve fencers to
41	41	3 the NCAA Championships to compete in individual events, a
42	42	4 round-robin format of five-touch bouts, semifinal 15-touch
43	43	5 bouts, and final bouts in each weapon;
44	44	6 Whereas, During the Championships, sophomore Eszter
45	45	7 Muhari was perfect during her matches, going 23-0 in epee to
46	46	8 earn the gold for the second time;
47	47	9 Whereas, Freshman Magda Skarbonkiewicz finished as the
48	48	10 number one seed after pool play in sabre, going 21-1, and
49	49	11 eventually matched against freshman teammate Siobhan
50	50	12 Sullivan in the sabre finals before Skarbonkiewicz defeated
51	51	13 Sullivan 15-8 to win the title;
52	52	14 Whereas, Sophomore Chase Emmer went 17-6 in the foil
53	53	15 round-robin, earning the number two seed in the semifinal
54	54	16 knockout round against teammate Ziyuan Chen before
55	55	17 advancing to the final against Harvard's Andrew Chen, where
56	56	18 he secured his first individual title with a final score of 15-10;
57	57	19 Whereas, Under the direction of head coach Gia
58	58	20 Kvaratskhelia, the Fighting Irish finished the Championship
59	59	21 with 183 points, clenching their fourth team title in the last five
60	60	22 years, sixth under Coach Kvaratskhelia, and fourteeth overall;
61	61	23 Whereas, Mike DeCicco started as the men's team head
62	62	24 coach in 1962, became co-ed head coach in 1977 with the
63	63	25 addition of the women's team, and went on to the championship
64	64	26 in 1977, 1978, and 1986;
65	65	27 Whereas, Yves Auriol took over the women's team in 1986,
66	66	28 won the 1987 women's championship, and coached side by side
67	67	29 with DeCicco to win the national championship in 1994;

69	69	1 Whereas, Head Coach Janusz Bednarski coached from
70	70	2 2002-2014, where he led his team to be co-ed champions in
71	71	3 2003, 2005, and 2011;
72	72	4 Whereas, After the team championship and three individual
73	73	5 titles, increasing their NCAA individual titles to 48, Notre
74	74	6 Dame moved into a tie with Penn State for second place in
75	75	7 NCAA history for most fencing national titles; and
76	76	8 Whereas, Following the NCAA championship win, the
77	77	9 Fighting Irish earned six of eight ACC fencing awards,
78	78	10 including Fencer of the Year for Eszter Muhari (epee), Magda
79	79	11 Skarbonkiewicz (sabre), Chase Emmer (foil), and Radu Nitu
80	80	12 (sabre), while Coach Kvaratskhelia swept the coaching awards
81	81	13 for both ACC Women’s and Men's Coach of the Year:
82	82	14 Therefore,
83	83	15 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly
84	84	16 of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives
85	85	17 concurring:
86	86	18 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly
87	87	19 congratulates the Notre Dame fencing team on winning the
88	88	20 2025 NCAA championship.
89	89	21 SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby
90	90	22 directed to transmit copies of this Resolution to all coaches
91	91	23 and all members of the Notre Dame fencing team.
