A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION congratulating the University of
Notre Dame fencing team on winning the 2025 National Collegiate
Athletic Association (NCAA) Championship.

1 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION congratulating the
2 University of Notre Dame fencing team on winning the 2025
3 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA)
4 Championship.
5 Whereas, On March 23, 2025, The University of Notre
6 Dame fencing program won its fourteenth national
7 championship over a four day competition at Penn State;
8 Whereas, The Notre Dame women's fencing team finished
9 the 2024-2025 season with a 35-10 team record, 818-397 bout
10 record, a sweep of all three weapons during the individual
11 portions of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC)
12 championships for the fourth straight season, and claimed the
13 women's ninth ACC team title before competing at the NCAA
14 Midwest Regional;  
15 Whereas, The Notre Dame men's team completed the
16 season with a 37-6 record, 798-363 bout record, and their
17 eighth ACC team title before competing alongside the Notre
18 Dame women in the Regional;
19 Whereas, At the NCAA Midwest Regional, Notre Dame
20 fencing claimed all six gold medal spots, with Kaylin Hsieh and
21 Maruan Osman Touson winning epee, Ariadna Tucker and
22 Radu Nitu finishing first in foil, and Siobhan Sullivan and Liam
23 Bas finishing first in sabre for the women's and men's,
24 respectively;

1 Whereas, As a result of their performance, the Notre Dame
2 fencing program sent the maximum allotted twelve fencers to
3 the NCAA Championships to compete in individual events, a
4 round-robin format of five-touch bouts, semifinal 15-touch
5 bouts, and final bouts in each weapon;
6 Whereas, During the Championships, sophomore Eszter
7 Muhari was perfect during her matches, going 23-0 in epee to
8 earn the gold for the second time;
9 Whereas, Freshman Magda Skarbonkiewicz finished as the
10 number one seed after pool play in sabre, going 21-1, and
11 eventually matched against freshman teammate Siobhan
12 Sullivan in the sabre finals before Skarbonkiewicz defeated
13 Sullivan 15-8 to win the title;
14 Whereas, Sophomore Chase Emmer went 17-6 in the foil
15 round-robin, earning the number two seed in the semifinal
16 knockout round against teammate Ziyuan Chen before
17 advancing to the final against Harvard's Andrew Chen, where
18 he secured his first individual title with a final score of 15-10;
19 Whereas, Under the direction of head coach Gia
20 Kvaratskhelia, the Fighting Irish finished the Championship
21 with 183 points, clenching their fourth team title in the last five
22 years, sixth under Coach Kvaratskhelia, and fourteeth overall;
23 Whereas, Mike DeCicco started as the men's team head
24 coach in 1962, became co-ed head coach in 1977 with the
25 addition of the women's team, and went on to the championship
26 in 1977, 1978, and 1986;
27 Whereas, Yves Auriol took over the women's team in 1986,
28 won the 1987 women's championship, and coached side by side
29 with DeCicco to win the national championship in 1994;

1 Whereas, Head Coach Janusz Bednarski coached from
2 2002-2014, where he led his team to be co-ed champions in
3 2003, 2005, and 2011;
4 Whereas, After the team championship and three individual
5 titles, increasing their NCAA individual titles to 48, Notre
6 Dame moved into a tie with Penn State for second place in
7 NCAA history for most fencing national titles; and
8 Whereas, Following the NCAA championship win, the
9 Fighting Irish earned six of eight ACC fencing awards,
10 including Fencer of the Year for Eszter Muhari (epee), Magda
11 Skarbonkiewicz (sabre), Chase Emmer (foil), and Radu Nitu
12 (sabre), while Coach Kvaratskhelia swept the coaching awards
13 for both ACC Women’s and Men's Coach of the Year: 
14 Therefore,
15 Be it resolved by the Senate of the General Assembly
16 of the State of Indiana, the House of Representatives
17	concurring:
18 SECTION 1. That the Indiana General Assembly
19 congratulates the Notre Dame fencing team on winning the
20 2025 NCAA championship.
21 SECTION 2. The Secretary of the Senate is hereby
22 directed to transmit copies of this Resolution to all coaches
23 and all members of the Notre Dame fencing team.
