| 14 | 14 | | 1 A SENATE RESOLUTION to recognize Hoosier Boys |

| 15 | 15 | | 2 State for their ongoing efforts to highlight the value of our form |

| 17 | 17 | | 4 Whereas, The Boys State program was created by Hayes |
|---|
| 18 | 18 | | 5 Kennedy and Harold Card in 1935; |
|---|
| 19 | 19 | | 6 Whereas, Kennedy and Card wanted to stress to the youth |
|---|
| 20 | 20 | | 7 the importance and value of our democratic form of |
|---|
| 21 | 21 | | 8 government and maintain an effort to preserve it; |
|---|
| 22 | 22 | | 9 Whereas, The Illinois Department of the American Legion |
|---|
| 23 | 23 | | 10 approved this project and in June of 1935 the first "Boys State" |
|---|
| 24 | 24 | | 11 was held. In 1937 the Indiana Department of the American |
|---|
| 25 | 25 | | 12 Legion followed with their first "Hoosier Boys State" program |
|---|
| 26 | 26 | | 13 and by 1941, 34 states were running a Boys State program. |

| 27 | 27 | | 14 Currently 49 states and Washington, D.C. conduct an American |
|---|
| 28 | 28 | | 15 Legion Boys State program; |
|---|
| 29 | 29 | | 16 Whereas, Trine University in Angola, Indiana, hosts the |

| 30 | 30 | | 17 Hoosier Boys State program and the participants learn about |
|---|
| 31 | 31 | | 18 the execution of city, county, and state-level government |
|---|
| 32 | 32 | | 19 procedures while fulfilling the civics requirement for the |

| 35 | 35 | | 2 Whereas, Hoosier Boys State builds important real-world |
