SENATE RESOLUTION ____
MR. PRESIDENT:
I offer the following resolution and move its adoption:
1 A SENATE RESOLUTION to recognize Hoosier Boys
2 State for their ongoing efforts to highlight the value of our form
3 of government.
4 Whereas, The Boys State program was created by Hayes
5 Kennedy and Harold Card in 1935;
6 Whereas, Kennedy and Card wanted to stress to the youth
7 the importance and value of our democratic form of
8 government and maintain an effort to preserve it;
9 Whereas, The Illinois Department of the American Legion
10 approved this project and in June of 1935 the first "Boys State"
11 was held. In 1937 the Indiana Department of the American
12 Legion followed with their first "Hoosier Boys State" program
13 and by 1941, 34 states were running a Boys State program.
14 Currently 49 states and Washington, D.C. conduct an American
15 Legion Boys State program;
16 Whereas, Trine University in Angola, Indiana, hosts the
17 Hoosier Boys State program and the participants learn about
18 the execution of city, county, and state-level government
19 procedures while fulfilling the civics requirement for the

1 Graduation Pathways Diploma; and
2 Whereas, Hoosier Boys State builds important real-world
3 skills and leadership qualities in exceptional young men by
4 creating a functional state government based on Indiana's
5 political process: Therefore,
6 Be it resolved by the Senate of the
7 General Assembly of the State of Indiana:
8 SECTION 1. That the Indiana Senate recognizes Hoosier
9 Boys State for their ongoing efforts in maintaining and
10 preserving our form of government.
11 SECTION 2. That the Secretary of the Senate is hereby
12 directed to submit one copy of this Resolution to the Hoosier
13 Boys State program.
