FIRE PROTECTION:  Provides relative to smoke detectors
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 40:1580.1 and 1581(A), relative to smoke detectors; to require2
new or renovated hotel or motel rooms to have sleeping rooms equipped with an3
operable ten-year, sealed lithium battery photoelectric type smoke detector; to4
require one- or two-family dwellings to contain an operable ten-year, sealed lithium5
battery photoelectric type smoke detector; and to provide for related matters.6
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:7
Section 1. R.S. 40:1580.1 and 1581(A) are hereby amended and reenacted to read8
as follows: 9
§1580.1.  Fire alarms; hotel or motel rooms10
A. Every new or renovated hotel or motel room shall have sleeping rooms11
equipped with an operable ten-year, sealed lithium battery photoelectric type smoke12
detector.13
B.  Every In addition, every new or renovated hotel or motel room shall have14
sleeping rooms equipped with approved fire detection and alarm systems for the15
hearing impaired in case of fire in accordance with the requirements of Section 9 of16
the Americans with Disabilities Act Accessibility Guidelines (ADAAG) table 9.1.217
and 9.1.3.18
B. C. In hotels or motels not covered by Subsection 	A B of this Section19

motels with more than fifty but fewer than one hundred rooms at least two systems1
shall be available. In such hotels or motels with more than one hundred rooms four2
systems shall be available. The availability of such system shall be posted in every3
room.4
§1581.  Smoke detectors; one- or two-family dwellings5
A. Effective January 1, 2011, all existing one- or two-family dwellings at the6
time of sale or lease, shall contain, at a minimum, an operable ten-year, sealed7
lithium battery photoelectric type smoke detector.8

Present law provides that, effective Jan. 1, 2011, all existing one- or two-family dwellings
at the time of sale or lease, shall contain, at a minimum, an operable ten-year, sealed lithium
battery smoke detector.
Proposed law provides that, effective Jan. 1, 2011, all existing one- or two-family dwellings
at the time of sale or lease, shall contain, at a minimum, an operable ten-year, sealed lithium
battery photoelectric type smoke detector.
