FIRE PROTECTION:  Provides relative to smoke detectors
AN ACT1
To amend and reenact R.S. 40:1581(A), relative to smoke detectors; to require one- or two-2
family dwellings to contain an operable ten-year, sealed lithium battery photoelectric3
type smoke detector; and to provide for related matters.4
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5
Section 1.  R.S. 40:1581(A) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows: 6
ยง1581.  Smoke detectors; one- or two-family dwellings7
A. Effective January 1, 2011, all existing one- or two-family dwellings at the8
time of sale or lease, shall contain, at a minimum, an operable ten-year, sealed9
lithium battery photoelectric type smoke detector.10

Abstract: Requires one- or two-family dwellings to contain an operable 10 year, sealed
lithium battery photoelectric type smoke detector.
Present law provides that, effective Jan. 1, 2011, all existing one- or two-family dwellings
at the time of sale or lease shall contain, at a minimum, an operable 10 year, sealed lithium
battery smoke detector.
Proposed law retains present law but requires that the smoke detector shall also be a
photoelectric type smoke detector.
