A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To recognize Monday, June 7, 2010, as UNO Day at the Louisiana Legislature.2
WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans opened its doors on September 6, 1958,3
as the first fully integrated public university in the Southeastern United States; and 4
WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans has the most racially and culturally5
diverse student body in Louisiana with more than forty-seven percent of its students being6
members of racial or ethnic minority groups or international students; and7
WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans has educated students from all sixty-four8
Louisiana parishes, all fifty states, and more than eighty nations; and 9
WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans has extended its professional reach and10
academic influence nationally and internationally with high quality academic programs in11
Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico; and 12
WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans has developed numerous award-winning13
academic programs of national distinction, including accounting, chemistry, creative writing,14
film and video, jazz studies, naval architecture, and hotel, restaurant, and tourism15
administration; and 16
WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans faculty has achieved national recognition17
in the American academic community and includes such distinguished professors as Steven18
Ambrose, Rick Barton, Harold Batiste, Carol Gelderman, Susan Howell, Ellis Marsalis, and19

WHEREAS, as Louisiana's major urban university, the University of New Orleans1
has been a critical asset in the post-Katrina recovery of the New Orleans area, including the2
expansion of its award-winning Charter School Network; and 3
WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans' students, faculty, and alumni have4
launched active and effective initiatives in support of the university's academic and5
community objectives; and6
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to set aside a special day in honor of the University of7
New Orleans.8
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby9
recognize Monday, June 7, 2010, as UNO Day at the Louisiana Legislature and does hereby10
commend the University of New Orleans for its significant and lasting contributions to the11
state of Louisiana.12
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted13
to Dr. Timothy P. Ryan, chancellor of the University of New Orleans.14
