HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 162
BY REPRESENTATIVE TUCKER AND SENATOR CHAI SSON
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To recognize Monday, June 7, 2010, as UNO Day at the Louisiana Legislature.
WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans opened its doors on September 6, 1958,
as the first fully integrated public university in the Southeastern United States; and 
WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans has the most racially and culturally
diverse student body in Louisiana with more than forty-seven percent of its students being
members of racial or ethnic minority groups or international students; and
WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans has educated students from all sixty-four
Louisiana parishes, all fifty states, and more than eighty nations; and 
WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans has extended its professional reach and
academic influence nationally and internationally with high quality academic programs in
Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Jamaica, and Puerto Rico; and 
WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans has developed numerous award-winning
academic programs of national distinction, including accounting, chemistry, creative writing,
film and video, jazz studies, naval architecture, and hotel, restaurant, and tourism
administration; and 
WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans faculty has achieved national recognition
in the American academic community and includes such distinguished professors as Steven
Ambrose, Rick Barton, Harold Batiste, Carol Gelderman, Susan Howell, Ellis Marsalis, and
Tim Ryan; and 
WHEREAS, as Louisiana's major urban university, the University of New Orleans
has been a critical asset in the post-Katrina recovery of the New Orleans area, including the
expansion of its award-winning Charter School Network; and  ENROLLEDHCR NO. 162

WHEREAS, the University of New Orleans' students, faculty, and alumni have
launched active and effective initiatives in support of the university's academic and
community objectives; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to set aside a special day in honor of the University of
New Orleans.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
recognize Monday, June 7, 2010, as UNO Day at the Louisiana Legislature and does hereby
commend the University of New Orleans for its significant and lasting contributions to the
state of Louisiana.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a suitable copy of this Resolution be transmitted
to Dr. Timothy P. Ryan, chancellor of the University of New Orleans.
