HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 35

A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To urge and request the Department of Transportation and Development to study the
possibility of installing highway shoulders along that portion of Louisiana Highway
308 which runs south of Louisiana Highway 90 in Lafourche Parish and through
Ascension Parish to Louisiana Highway 1.
WHEREAS, Louisiana Highway 308 was closed several hours in the past due to
numerous vehicular accidents that caused wrecked motor vehicles to be pulled off of the
roadway because of the lack of highway shoulders; and
WHEREAS, vehicle breakdowns on a highway lacking a highway shoulder would
create a strong possibility of accidents; and
WHEREAS, currently there is a new bridge being constructed over Bayou Lafourche
in LaRose, Louisiana, as part of the federal stimulus package; and
WHEREAS, this new bridge currently being constructed will serve as a direct link
connecting Louisiana Highway 308 to Louisiana Highway 3235, a four-lane highway used
mostly by commercial motor vehicles traveling to and from Port Fourchon; and
WHEREAS, other vehicles, including offshore service vehicles, will be traveling on
Louisiana Highway 308 more frequently when the new bridge is open to traveling motorists
and these vehicles; and
WHEREAS, this portion of Louisiana Highway 308 and the new bridge currently
being constructed will serve as both a critical link and an evacuation route between the Gulf
of Mexico and Louisiana Highway 90; and
WHEREAS, with the installation of highway shoulders, it would diminish the
current public safety hazard and would diminish the waiting times of necessity of clearing
accidents along this stretch of Louisiana Highway 308. ENROLLEDHCR NO. 35

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
urge and request the Department of Transportation and Development to study the possibility
of installing highway shoulders along that portion of Louisiana Highway 308 which runs
south of Louisiana Highway 90 in Lafourche Parish and through Ascension Parish to
Louisiana Highway 1.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation and
Development is further requested to study the installation of highway shoulders, specifically
along the lengthy stretches of farmland and where there are no residences or businesses
adjacent to the highway.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that the Department of Transportation and
Development also shall consider for the driving public to install highway shoulders through
Ascension Parish to Louisiana Highway 1.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to the
secretary of the Department of Transportation and Development.
