SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 66
BY SENATOR LONG AND REPRESENTATIVE NOWLIN 
COMMENDATIONS.  Proclaims May 18, 2010, as "Louisiana School for Math, Science,
and the Arts Day".
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON1
To proclaim May 18, 2010, as "Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts Day".2
WHEREAS, the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts, or "the Louisiana3
School", was established by legislative act in 1981 as an independent, residential high school4
to serve the academic, artistic, and creative needs of gifted and high-achieving Louisiana5
students; and6
WHEREAS, the Louisiana School officially opened its doors on the campus of7
Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana in the fall of 1983 and graduated8
its first class in May of 1985; and9
WHEREAS, the Louisiana School recruits academically gifted students across10
Louisiana to select a student body that represents at least seventy-five percent of the state's11
public school systems, as well as nonpublic schools, and which reflects the ethnic, cultural,12
and socioeconomic diversity of the state; and13
WHEREAS, since those first commencement exercises in 1985, the Louisiana School14
has produced more than four thousand graduates who have gone on to distinguish15
themselves at colleges and universities across the United States and in their personal and16
professional lives; and17
WHEREAS, the stated mission of the Louisiana School is to "foster in its young18 SCR NO. 66

scholars lifelong growth toward reaching individual potential and toward finding places of1
work and service in a global society through the examination and exchange of ideas in a2
community of learners"; and3
WHEREAS, the Louisiana School is nationally recognized for its commitment to4
excellence in teaching and learning and has twice been selected by Newsweek magazine as5
one of twenty-one public elite high schools in the United States; and6
WHEREAS, it is abundantly clear that the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and7
the Arts has fulfilled its mission with utmost distinction for more than twenty-five years by8
establishing and upholding the highest standards for its faculty and students.9
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby10
proclaim May 18, 2010, as "Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts Day".11
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Dr.12
Patrick Widhalm, Executive Director, Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts.13
