SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 66
BY SENATOR LONG AND REPRESENTATIVE NOWLIN 
A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON
To proclaim May 18, 2010, as "Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts Day".
WHEREAS, the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts, or "the Louisiana
School", was established by legislative act in 1981 as an independent, residential high school
to serve the academic, artistic, and creative needs of gifted and high-achieving Louisiana
students; and
WHEREAS, the Louisiana School officially opened its doors on the campus of
Northwestern State University in Natchitoches, Louisiana in the fall of 1983 and graduated
its first class in May of 1985; and
WHEREAS, the Louisiana School recruits academically gifted students across
Louisiana to select a student body that represents at least seventy-five percent of the state's
public school systems, as well as nonpublic schools, and which reflects the ethnic, cultural,
and socioeconomic diversity of the state; and
WHEREAS, since those first commencement exercises in 1985, the Louisiana School
has produced more than four thousand graduates who have gone on to distinguish
themselves at colleges and universities across the United States and in their personal and
professional lives; and
WHEREAS, the stated mission of the Louisiana School is to "foster in its young
scholars lifelong growth toward reaching individual potential and toward finding places of
work and service in a global society through the examination and exchange of ideas in a
community of learners"; and
WHEREAS, the Louisiana School is nationally recognized for its commitment to
excellence in teaching and learning and has twice been selected by Newsweek magazine as
one of twenty-one public elite high schools in the United States; and
WHEREAS, it is abundantly clear that the Louisiana School for Math, Science, and
the Arts has fulfilled its mission with utmost distinction for more than twenty-five years by
establishing and upholding the highest standards for its faculty and students. SCR NO. 66	ENROLLED

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
proclaim May 18, 2010, as "Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts Day".
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to Dr.
Patrick Widhalm, Executive Director, Louisiana School for Math, Science, and the Arts.
