SENATE RESOLUTION NO. 10
BY SENATORS LAFLEUR, ADLEY, CHABERT, DUPLESSIS, N. GAUTREAUX AND
QUINN AND REPRESENTATIVES CHANDLER, ELLINGTON,
GISCLAIR, ST. GERMAIN, THIBAUT AND SAM JONES 
LEGIS POWERS/FUNCTIONS.  Provides with respect to the election of the president and
president pro tempore of the Senate.
A RESOLUTION1
To amend and re-adopt Senate Rule No. 3.2(A) of the Rules of Order of the Senate, relative2
to election of the president of the Senate; to provide that the president and president3
pro tempore are to be elected by confidential ballot.4
BE IT RESOLVED that the Senate of the Legislature of Louisiana hereby amends5
and re-adopts Senate Rule No. 3.2(A) of the Rules of Order of the Senate to read as follows:6
Rule 3.2. President; election; removal; vacancy 7
A. Immediately after the members take the oath of office on the second8
Monday in January after their election every four years, the President shall be elected9
by the affirmative vote of at least twenty members. The vote shall be viva voce by10
confidential ballot in accordance with the Joint Rules of Order of the Senate11
and House of Representatives.12

Present rule provides that the president of the Senate is to be elected by the affirmative vote
of at least 20 members, and that the vote is to be viva voce (by voice).
Proposed rule provides that the president of the Senate is to be elected by confidential ballot
in accordance with the Joint Rules of the Senate and the House of Representatives.
Proposed rule otherwise retains present rule.
Present rule provides that the president pro tempore of the Senate is to be elected by the
members of the Senate from among the members thereof in the same manner as the
president.
Proposed rule retains present rule.
