WHEREAS, there are several modifiable behaviors associated with decreasing the
risk for skin cancer, such as limiting exposure to the sun during the midday hours of 10 a.m.

protect the skin around the eyes and a broad spectrum sunscreen with a sun protection factor
(SPF) of 30 or higher; and
WHEREAS, protecting children, in particular, from the sun is important because
severe sunburns in childhood greatly increase the risk of melanoma in later life; and

growths or the appearance of new growths; and
WHEREAS, the American Cancer Society skin cancer screening guidelines
recommend that adult men and women:
Thoroughly examine their skin on a monthly basis.
Undergo regular dermatologic assessment.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
recognize May 2011 as National Skin Cancer Awareness month in Louisiana.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this Resolution will further promote the
importance of early detection of skin cancer through adherence to screening guidelines.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that a copy of this Resolution be transmitted to
