SHERIFFS: Provides relative to the payment of insurance premiums for retirees of the
Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office
AN ACT1
To enact R.S. 13:5554(G)(3), relative to payment of group insurance premiums for sheriffs2
and deputy sheriffs of the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office; to provide for requirements3
relative to age and years of service with the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office after a4
certain date; and to provide for related matters.5
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:6
Section 1.  R.S. 13:5554(G)(3) is hereby enacted to read as follows: 7

(3) Notwithstanding the provisions of Paragraph (1) of this Subsection, the12
sheriff of Acadia Parish shall pay out of the sheriff's general fund the premium costs13
of group insurance for any sheriff or deputy sheriff who has retired from the Acadia14
Parish Sheriff's Office and who is eligible to receive benefits from the Sheriff's15
Pension and Relief Fund, as follows:16
(a)  Fifty percent of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, and17
medical expense insurance contracted for under the provisions of this Section and the18
first ten thousand dollars of life insurance contracted for under the provisions of this19 HLS 12RS-1986	ENGROSSED

Section if the sheriff or deputy sheriff  has attained the age of fifty-five years with1
twenty or more years of full-time service with the Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office.2
(b)  One hundred percent of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical,3
and medical expense insurance contracted for under the provisions of this Section4
and the first ten thousand dollars of life insurance contracted for under the provisions5
of this Section if the sheriff or deputy sheriff has completed thirty years of full-time6
continuous service with the  Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office, regardless of age.7
(c) The provisions of Paragraph (1) of this Subsection, as applicable to the8
Acadia Parish Sheriff's Office, shall apply to sheriffs and deputy sheriffs retired on9
or before December 31, 2012. The provisions of Subparagraphs (a) and (b) of this10
Paragraph shall apply to sheriffs and deputy sheriffs who retire after December 31,11
2012; however, any sheriff or deputy sheriff who has met the eligibility requirements12
pursuant to Paragraph (1) of this Subsection, on or before December 31, 2012, may13
retire at any time with full benefits.14

Abstract: Requires the sheriff of Acadia Parish to pay group insurance premiums for
sheriffs and deputy sheriffs retiring after Dec. 31, 2012, who have attained a
specified age and have served for a certain number of years with the Acadia Parish
Sheriff's Office.
Present law requires that 100% of the premium costs of group hospital, surgical, and medical
expense insurance shall be paid from the sheriff's general fund for all sheriffs and deputy
sheriffs who retire from certain parishes including Acadia Parish with at least 15 years of
service and who are at least 55 years of age or 30 years of service regardless of age.
Proposed law retains present law.
Proposed law requires, for all sheriffs and deputy sheriffs who retire from the Acadia Parish
Sheriff's Office after Dec. 31, 2012, that premium costs of group hospital, surgical, and
medical expense insurance and the first $10,000 of life insurance shall be paid from the
sheriff's general fund as follows:
(1)50% of the premium cost paid with at least 20 years of service and has attained 55

(2)100% of the premium cost paid with 30 years of continuous service regardless of
age.
Proposed law provides that any sheriff or deputy sheriff that has met eligibility requirements
prior to Dec. 31, 2012, may retire at anytime with full benefits.
