JUDGES/JUSTICE OF PEACE: Provides with respect to qualifications for justices of the
peace
AN ACT1
To repeal R.S. 13:2582(A)(2), relative to justices of the peace; to provide relative to2
qualifications; to remove the mandatory retirement age of justices of the peace; and3
to provide for related matters.4
Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:5
Section 1.  R.S. 13:2582(A)(2) is hereby repealed in its entirety.6

Abstract: Removes the mandatory retirement age for justices of the peace.
Present law provides that any person who qualifies to run for the office of justice of the
peace after 2008 shall not have attained the age of 70 years by the date of qualification, and
further provides that any justice of the peace who attains 70 years of age while serving a
term of office shall be allowed to complete that term of office.
Proposed law repeals present law.
