Page 1 of 2 Regular Session, 2014 ENROLLED SENATE CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON NO. 37 BY SENATORS GARY SMITH AND BROWN AND REPRESENTATI VES GAINES, MILLER AND WILLMOTT A CONCURRENT RESOLUTI ON To commend La'Keisha McKinney on being selected the 2014 Teacher of the Year. WHEREAS, educators are one of our state's greatest resources because our children would not learn without their tireless hard work and dedication; and WHEREAS, Ms. La'Keisha McKinney has proven that she has superb skills for teaching and reaching the students with whom she has been entrusted over the years; and WHEREAS, during her last four years in the classroom she served as a reading and math teacher for gifted students grades three through six at R.J. Vial Elementary School in Paradis, Louisiana; and WHEREAS, Ms. McKinney currently serves as the assistant principal at New Sarpy Elementary School in Destrehan, Louisiana; and WHEREAS, she was named the school teacher of the year at R.J. Vial Elementary School, the district's teacher of the year, and now the state's teacher of the year; and WHEREAS, Ms. McKinney has sixteen years of experience in the classrooms of St. Charles Parish and is a National Board Certified teacher; and WHEREAS, she was awarded Teacher of the Year at Mimosa Park Elementary School in 2007; and WHEREAS, Ms. McKinney received her Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education and Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction, and Instruction in Early Childhood Education from the University of New Orleans; and WHEREAS, as a National Board Certified Teacher she is a member of the School Improvement Team, the College and Career Readiness Taskforce, the Louisiana Reading Association, and the St. Charles Parish Reading Council and serves as a district mentor; and WHEREAS, the 2014 Louisiana Teacher of the Year program represents Louisiana's commitment to effective instructional and leadership practices that lead to student success in college and career; and SCR NO. 37 ENROLLED Page 2 of 2 WHEREAS, this emphasis on educators and the integral role they play is a key aspect of Louisiana Believes, which is the state's plan that focuses on empowering and celebrating educators across Louisiana who are making a very real impact in the lives of children. THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby commend La'Keisha McKinney on being selected the 2014 Teacher of the Year and for the difference that she makes in the lives of children and the impact that her teachings have on students' future college and career success.
