HB 227 Engrossed	2019 Regular Session	Lance Harris
Abstract: Changes the authorized duration of special education services for individuals at the La.
Special Education Center.
Present law authorizes the Bd. of Elementary and Secondary Education to provide special education
services at the La. Special Education Center in Alexandria when it is determined to be in the best
interest of the student.
Present law authorizes continuing special educational services at the center until the 32nd birthday
for individuals who have not reached employable proficiency by their 22nd birthday. Specifies that
such authority is subject to approval of the superintendent of the Special School District and
availability of funds.
Present law provides for licensing of the center by the La. Dept. of Health.
Proposed law retains present law except authorizes continuing services until an age determined by
the center's licensure provided by the Louisiana Department of Health instead of the 32nd birthday.
