COURTS/MAGISTRATES: Provides relative to the magistrate judge position of the 14th

1 AN ACT
2To amend and reenact R.S. 13:589(A), relative to the Fourteenth Judicial District Court; to
3 provide for the election of the magistrate judge; to provide for the election section
4 from which the magistrate judge is elected; to provide for an effective date; and to
5 provide for related matters.
6Be it enacted by the Legislature of Louisiana:
7 Section 1. R.S. 13:589(A) is hereby amended and reenacted to read as follows:
8 ยง589. Fourteenth Judicial District Court; magistrate judge
9 A. The office of magistrate judge of the Fourteenth Judicial District Court
10 is hereby created and shall be an elected position. The magistrate judge shall be
11 elected from election sections one and section three combined. The initial election
12 shall occur in the fall of 2020 and the elected term shall begin January 1, 2021. The
13 magistrate judge shall serve a six-year term. The position is a full-time position, and
14 the magistrate judge is prohibited from practicing law.

16 Section 2. This Act shall become effective on July 1, 2020.

Abstract: Changes the election section from which the magistrate judge is elected in the
Fourteenth Judicial District Court.
Present law provides that the Fourteenth Judicial District Court magistrate judge be elected
from election sections one and three combined.
Proposed law provides that the Fourteenth Judicial District Court magistrate judge be elected
from election section three only.
Effective July 1, 2020.
