HOUSE CONCURRENT RESOL UTION NO. 98

A CONCURRENT RESOL UTION
To designate Thursday, May 18, 2023, as AKA Day at the state capitol and to commend the
members of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, which has the distinction
of being the first Greek-letter sorority established by African American college women, was
founded at Howard University in Washington, D.C., in 1908; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority's unending quest to be "Supreme in
Service to All Mankind" spans across domestic and international boundaries through the
service of members of more than one thousand chapters around the world; and
WHEREAS, the state of Louisiana hosts chapters on college and university campuses
and active alumnae groups throughout the state; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, is a union of over three
hundred thousand energetic, ambitious, and dedicated college-trained women who have
consciously chosen this affiliation as a means of service to promote community initiatives
in health preservation, preventative health education, academic excellence, civic
engagement, and economic empowerment; and
WHEREAS, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, chapters encourage
members to become involved and committed community volunteers in five primary service
target areas that actively contribute to the educational, civic, and social lives of the citizens
of Louisiana; and
WHEREAS, the current international program, Soaring to Greater Heights of Service
and Sisterhood, has five initiatives: Empower Our Families, Build Our Economic Wealth,
Enhance Our Environment, Advocate for Social Justice, and Uplift Our Local Community;

WHEREAS, in addition, the sorority collaborates with Soles 4 Souls and Lions Club
International and continues to focus on breast cancer awareness and heart health; and
WHEREAS, whether making and sending dresses and shirts to girls and boys in
Haiti, providing support to organizations that assist refugees and their families with
integrating into American life, saluting the Harlem Renaissance, providing guidance on care
for the caregivers, credit repair and monitoring or entrepreneurship and the black dollar,
assisting high school students demystify the college admissions and enrollment process, or
developing emerging young leaders through mentoring programs throughout the nation, the
women of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, are committed to making a positive
impact upon campuses, communities, our nation, and the world; and
WHEREAS, AKA Day at the state capitol is a national program through which
Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority members throughout the nation meet with their legislators to
address issues that are pertinent to their communities; and
WHEREAS, it is appropriate to commend the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Incorporated, for one hundred fifteen years of exemplary leadership and
outstanding community service, and to designate Thursday, May 18, 2023, AKA Day at the
state capitol.
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Legislature of Louisiana does hereby
designate Thursday, May 18, 2023, as AKA Day at the state capitol and does hereby
commend and express enduring appreciation to the members of Alpha Kappa Alpha
Sorority, Incorporated, for their exemplary leadership and outstanding community service
and for the tremendous honor and pride these women bring to their families, friends,
communities, the state of Louisiana, and our nation and to communities across the globe.
